"Riv, come on Buddy. This has got to stop sometime soon right?" I sobbed holding my crying son, gently bouncing him in my arms as I paced in my living room. He was screaming and crying his head off.
This has been going on for 4 nights now and I didn't know what else to do. The doctors had no clue why he would do this but said he was perfectly healthy.
I knew his life had been uprooted recently with us moving since I left my husband. He didn't want me anymore and clearly didn't want the son he helped create so it was just easier to leave and start a new life.
I was pacing the living room and even walking to the big window to look out at the city in the middle of the night, River didn't seem to care for it and screamed louder.
"Bubba, you are going to get us kicked out of this building and it's the only place I can afford..." I whispered. I was trying to hold it together because a new mom crying with a baby crying wasn't going to help anything.
"I can't even take you outside for a walk, taking you down 3 flights of steps crying like you are will wake the whole building." I said looking at his stroller.
I walked into his nursery and grabbed his favorite stuffed animal thinking that would help but it only made it worse.
I looked at my son who was looking at me as he cried and I started crying. I don't know what I was thinking? I couldn't do this on my own. I should have gone and lived with my mother. Yes she was disappointed in me and my life choices and wasn't even really happy I had a child but offered to help take care of the baby. I knew there would be no loving care taken so I said I could survive alone.
As I sat down and just started crying, still gently bouncing River there was a knock on the door. I looked at the front door from my seat, scared to answer it. I didn't want it to be an angry neighbor or worse the landlord.
I heard the knock again and I just sighed and knew I needed to just deal with whoever was there and take whatever the consequences may be.
I walked to the door and when I opened it I saw my neighbor standing there looking disheveled and just tired. Steve Rogers, he was usually very sweet and always said hi when we saw each other but right now he wasn't looking very happy, as I could imagine.
He saw me, saw River and then looked back at me. He sighed, "River, buddy, what the heck man? You trying to wake the dead?" Steve asked taking River from my arms and he was still crying but looked at Steve and looked confused.
"I'm sorry if he woke you up, I really don't know what's wrong with him recently. The doctor said he must just be adjusting to the apartment and new life." I said trying to calm myself down. Steve held River and was rubbing his hand up and down his back, he was starting to calm being with Steve.
"Luna, it's fine. I'm also worried about you. Have you gotten any sleep?" Steve asked and I huffed a laugh as I wiped a few of my own tears away.
"If he is awake, I'm awake..." I trailed off and Steve sighed.
"Luna, you need to sleep too." Steve said and I shook my head.
"And let him cry all alone? I mean we have made it kind of like mother/son bonding time." I joked and Steve smirked shaking his head. It was then I noticed River was quiet and playing now with the stuff animal Steve had also taken from my hand.
I noticed we were also still standing in my doorway, "Please come in...sorry." I said moving to the side and Steve walked in. He walked over to the couch with River.
"Can we sit down and you stay calm?" Steve asked easily sitting on the couch. River whimpered and Steve just looked at him. He stopped and I just looked at Steve.
"How are you doing this?!" I asked shocked and Steve chuckled.
"Babies just seem to always be calm around me." Steve said and I smiled sitting next to him on the couch.
"Thank you for not screaming at me like any normal neighbor would have. I just don't know what I would have done." I said and Steve just slightly shook his head.
"Never, there is always a reason behind why a kid is freaking out. I just had to make sure you were both safe." Steve said and I smiled.
I reached over Steve and placed my hand on Rivers back gently and started rubbing and River yawned. I smiled knowing he was getting tired.
"If he is about to fall asleep you can put him in his crib." I said.
"I will wait until he's asleep so he doesn't know." Steve said and I chuckled but yawned as well.
Steve started humming lowly to calm River and put him to sleep. River snuggled into Steve and he smiled. He then felt another pressure on his other shoulder. Steve looked over to find me fast asleep on his shoulder and he smiled.
"Good night River, good night Luna." Steve whispered, propping his feet up on the coffee table, tilting his head back and falling asleep himself.

I woke up the next morning and River was fast asleep in his bassinet and I was laid down on the couch, covered up. I sat up quietly and looked around. Steve was here last night...right? I didn't dream it...did I?
I turned on the baby monitor and then grabbed the other end. I walked out of the apartment to see Steve waking out of his.
"Hey." I said and he smiled.
"Hey, I was hoping you would sleep a little longer." Steve said and I sighed.
"When did you leave?" I asked.
"Maybe an hour and a half ago. I fell asleep after you and River did. I didn't want to wake you when I left, I tried to be quiet." Steve said and I smiled.
"Thank you for last night." I said and Steve smiled.
"It wasn't a problem. I just knew you were nearing your wits end." Steve said and I gave a small nod.
"I was..." I said.
We stood silent and Steve sighed, "Luna, I'm not one to usually butt into peoples lives but you're an amazing mom and River is lucky to have you. I know it can be hard to ask for or accept help but if he gets like that again please come and get me." Steve said and I nodded.
"Thank you Steve. I may take you up on that." I said and he smiled.
"Well I have to run, so we'll talk later?" Steve said and I nodded.
"Sounds good." I said. Steve went to walk down the stairs and stopped as I went to open my apartment door.
"Luna, would you like to grab a cup of coffee sometime? Bring River with you." Steve asked and I smiled.
"Well River isn't into coffee just yet," I said causing us both to laugh, "But I would love to get a cup with you sometime." I smiled sweetly.
"How about Saturday? I pick you both up at 11?" Steve suggested causing me to nod.
"Sounds great." I said.
"It's a date." Steve said and then continued walking down the stairs.
