I walked into the gym. It wasn't a normal gym that I would usually go to, but this place offered some of the best self-defense training.

I walked in hugging myself clearly scared after looking around and seeing all the men hitting punching bags, grunting, gym rat types. Wasn't something I was used to at all.

"Can I help you?" I heard a female voice asked and I turned to see a blonde woman about my height and long blonde hair in a braid standing there in a sport bra and leggings.

"Um...I was here for the self-defense training..." I said just above a whisper still looking around. I heard a man yell as he punched a bag and I flinched. The lady I was talking to rushed closer to me and saw I had tears pooling in my eyes.

"Come with me." She placed a hand gently on my back and guided me into a quiet office. She guided me to a chair but then walked out.

Soon she was walking back in it's another female with red hair. The red-haired woman sat in the chair beside me, and the blonde-haired one sat behind the small desk.

"What's your name?" The blonde-haired lady asked.

"Tamera, most people call me Tam." I said with a small smile.

"Well, I'm Yelena and this is my older sister Natasha, everyone calls her Nat."

"Nice to meet both of you." I said and they just looked at each other.

"Yelena and I run the self-defense training. We don't have anyone else coming in for a class at the moment, but we would be willing to train you." Nat said and I half nodded.

"I would hate to put either of you out..." I trailed off.

"It's really no big deal. My husband is here all the time as is Yelena's boyfriend." Nat said and I just listened.

We were silent, the look Nat and Yelena share doesn't go unnoticed.

"Why are you wanting to take the class Tam?" Yelena asked and I tensed up at the question.

"I just feel like it might be beneficial being a woman..." I trailed off looking down in my lap at my hands.

"Tamera...you can be honest with us." Nat softly said.

I took a deep breath, "I just need to learn how to defend myself."

"Well, I just worry because when that guy out there yelled and punched the bag you jumped almost out of your skin." Yelena said and I just shook my head not able to speak.

"Okay well whenever you feel comfortable to tell us, you can. Just know this is a safe space here." Nat said and I gave her a small smile.

"So, when were you wanting to start?" Nat asked.

"As soon as I can..." I trailed off and they nodded.

"Well, we are free now? Do you have gym clothes?" Nat asked.

"In my trunk." I said and they smiled.

"Go get them and we will show you where you can change.

I walked outside still checking my surroundings constantly, had to make sure he didn't follow me. Once I grabbed my gym bag I walked back in a little more confident. I saw Nat and Yelena standing over at the boxing ring. I sighed and walked over to them.

"Oh, hey guys this is Tam. She is going to be training with Yelena and I." Nat said to the guys they were talking to.

"Nice to meet you, Tam." The longer haired guy said and I gave a half smile. "I'm Bucky."

"Nice to meet you." I said. He nudged the guy wearing the boxing gloves.

"Steve." He said giving a small salute. I gave a small head nod.

"Nice to meet both of you." I said.

Someone dropped a heavy mat behind me, and I jumped. Steve and Bucky snickered as Nat looked at me concerned.

"It was just a mat." Nat said and I half nodded. I noticed Bucky and Steve looking at me.

"A little jumpy. You sure she will even be able to hit?" Steve huffed. He went back to boxing with Bucky as Nat shook her head with a huff.

"Don't mind him, he's taken one too many hits to the head and forgot how to be polite." Nat said and I smiled. Yelena slung an arm around my shoulder, and we headed towards the locker room.

"Go ahead and change and then we will get started." Yelena said and I nodded as I headed inside.

I changed as quick as I could putting my bag in a locker and locking it with the spare lock I always left in the bag. When I walked back out, I found Yelena and Nat setting up some things and I walked over to them and gave them a small smile.

"Ready to get started?" Nat asked and I nodded.

I walked into my house later that night after spending most of the day at the gym and I was just wanting to soak in a hot bath and relax, I was in so much pain. Muscles I didn't even know existed were killing me.

"Where have you been?" The voice came from the dark living room as I passed it. The light flicked on, and I saw my father sitting there.

"I was at the gym and then went and got a coffee with some of the girls from the gym." I said and he just looked at me.

"Well John went by the gym today and didn't see you. So...I asked again...where we you?" My father, Johann Shmidt asked again.

"I'm telling you I was at the gym and then coffee. Why did John come looking for me anyway?" I asked.

"You are his property, he had the right to know where you are."

"I'm no one's property." I protested. I didn't even see my father move until it was too late, and he had me pinned against the wall, arm across my chest with so much pressure I couldn't breath.

"You will be his property the minute you both get married in 4 weeks. Until then, I'm stuck with you. Don't make do something I will regret Tamera." Johann said and I just half nodded, I just wanted to breath. I squeaked when his hand ended up just missing my head and punching the wall.

"Next time I won't miss." Johann said, I fell to the floor when he let me go. Johann walked out of the house, and I just stayed crumbled in a ball on the floor as tears filled my eyes.

This was the life was used to and it was only going to get worse with John. This is why I was taking my life into my own hands.
