I had just finished putting my cupcakes in the container and then I grabbed the other with the pot roast I made. There was a dinner for Christmas at the house next door...the Barbers, Andy, his wife Laurie and their teenage son Jacob.

A Christmas Eve party they always have and it was always talked about for weeks. I made sure I looked okay in my black dress slacks, red sweater that had a deep V neckline. I smiled as headed across my driveway to theirs and stopped not seeing mandy lights on in the house or any cars outside. I knew I was early but only by 10 minutes.

I knocked on the door and it was quickly opened but a down looking Jacob who then looked shock to see me.

"Uh...dad!" He called out as he also moved to the side and let me in.

"What Jacob?" Andy snapped walking in from the living room to see me standing there. "Astrid...what are you doing here?" Andy continued seeing me.

"The party...the Christmas Eve party you and Laurie throw every year..." I trailed off confused. I then looked at Jacob and Andy who were now both looking at the floor or anywhere so they didn't make eye contract me with.

"Hey Jake, why don't you take the stuff from Astrid then head upstairs so she and I can talk..." Andy said and he nodded.

"It's pot roast and cupcakes. Make yourself a plate..." I said and he smiled as he took the containers. He then looked at Andy.

"Can I get some before I go up?" Jacob asked and Andy nodded. Jacob walked into the kitchen and got him some food. I noticed more food containers were on the counter but no one else was here.

"Andy...what is going on?" I asked in a small voice. Jacob finished getting his food as Andy put him and I both a glass of whiskey and we sat on the couch. I slipped my heels off and I tucked my legs under me on the couch where we sat.

I was facing Andy. He was facing forward but slightly turned towards me. Once he heard Jacobs door shut he sighed.

"Laurie's gone." Andy spoke up catching me off guard.

"What do you mean gone?" I asked as Andy sipped his whiskey and I took a sip of mine as well.

"Well I mean I don't think it's been any secret that in the last couple months Laurie and I haven't been happy..."

"I noticed a little distance but I didn't know what was going on." I said.

Andy nodded, "Yeah, Laurie and I had a small argument a few weeks ago and it just kept going. It would stop for a little bit, we would be okay and then it would hit again. Finally, 2 nights ago something happened that couldn't be taken back. It caused Laurie to pack up and just leave. She said she is done and isn't coming back." Andy  explained then finished his whiskey.
