In 2024, Bini, a Filipino pop girl group, experienced a meteoric rise to fame. A year later, their success continues to soar as they prepare to release a new album. Not only have they amassed a massive Filipino fanbase, but their international presence has also grown significantly, with their hit single "Cherry on Top" climbing the global charts. As a project spearheaded by ABX, Bini's journey is far from over; rigorous training remains a constant as they gear up for more performances, including a potential world tour.
At the heart of their preparations is a large dance studio, specifically designed for their rigorous practices and workshops. This space, a blend of mirrors and polished wooden floors, is where Bini hones their performances. Unlike traditional bands, idol groups like Bini emphasize a blend of dancing and singing, demanding not only vocal precision but also exceptional stamina. Their practice schedule is intense, balancing multiple songs with complex choreography.
As the clock struck 3:30 PM, a tall man in a white polo shirt with the ABX logo called out, "Okay, everyone, it's 3:30. We'll take a 30-minute break and resume practice after."
"Alright. Thanks, Sir Z!" Aiah responded, her voice bright. "Anyone up for a trip to the cafeteria?"
A chorus of enthusiastic affirmations followed, and five of the girls headed towards the second-floor cafeteria. Meanwhile, Mikha and Maloi chose to stay behind in the dance hall, seeking a moment of rest.
"Don't you want to grab some merienda?" Maloi asked, glancing at Mikha with concern.
"I'm okay, ate Maloi. I just need a break—my arms are pretty tired from all the dancing," Mikha replied, her voice tinged with fatigue.
Maloi's worry deepened, prompting her to probe further. Mikha admitted she had stayed up late the previous night binge-watching a Netflix series, leading to her current exhaustion.
Maloi smiled, shaking her head in understanding. "I'm going to get something to drink. Want anything?"
"Maybe some Pocari," Mikha requested.
"Got it. I'll be back soon," Maloi said, her voice cheerful as she skipped towards the exit.
Left alone in the expansive dance hall, Mikha began to contemplate her rare moments of free time. "Maybe I should take a trip," she mused, her thoughts drifting to cooler places like Baguio. She recalled her travels to America and China, remembering how refreshing those experiences had been. Despite the grueling schedule of training and shows, she felt grateful for the opportunities and looked forward to a well-deserved break.
Determined to make the most of her time, Mikha rose from her spot. "Can't stay here forever. Let's see what the others are up to," she decided, making her way out of the dance hall.
As she passed by a partially open door, she was intrigued by the sound of music emanating from within. Curious, she peered inside and saw a man in a staff uniform lounging on a couch while another man, clad in a white hoodie, strummed a guitar and sang. The man's wavy hair and olive complexion caught Mikha's eye, and she couldn't help but think, "He looks cute."
Yet, it was the man's singing that truly captivated her. Though unfamiliar with the song, Mikha was struck by how perfectly his voice matched the melody, leaving her impressed and curious about the talent she had just stumbled upon.
[Track 03 - "Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard]
*If I could find you now, things would get better.
We could leave this town and run forever.
I know somewhere, somehow we'll be together.
Let your waves crash down on me and take away...*
Mikha had never heard this song before, but it resonated with her on a profound level. The lyrics spoke of escape and freedom, a stark contrast to her own tightly scheduled life. Each note seemed to mirror her yearning for a break from the relentless pace of her career. The idea of running away from it all, of leaving the bustling city behind and finding solace somewhere new, was intoxicating.
As the song concluded, Mikha was gently brought back to reality, her attention shifting to the conversation between Jon and Martin.
"How was the song, Martin?" Jon asked, looking up from his guitar with a hint of curiosity.
"Quite good. But you chose the acoustic version—why?" Martin replied, adjusting his position on the couch.
"I thought the acoustic would give it a more vibrant and mellow feel," Jon explained, his fingers absently strumming his guitar. "The stripped-down arrangement highlights the emotional depth of the lyrics, which also gives it some 'popping' feel. However, the original version has a more driving beat, which could energize a live performance."
Martin nodded thoughtfully. "That's true. The acoustic version does bring out the subtle nuances of the melody, but it might not have the same impact in a high-energy setting. The original composition could really elevate the song, especially with those punchy drum fills and lively guitar riffs."
Jon smiled, clearly pleased with the insight. "Exactly. The pop-rock elements in the original version are great for creating a powerful atmosphere. For this type of song, the arrangement can significantly affect its overall impact."
"Do you think adding a more pronounced bass line might enhance the acoustic version?" Martin suggested, his eyes lighting up with interest.
"Possibly," Jon agreed. "A stronger bass line might provide a richer foundation, making the song feel more robust even in its acoustic form. Though the violin part does get better in the acoustic setting"
Martin's fingers hovered over the music controls, clearly contemplating the next move. "That makes sense. We can just improve it on a later date, shall we move on to the next track?"
"Yeah, let's do that," Jon said, nodding. "Most of the tracks are a blend of pop, rock, and punk. We can see how they compare in terms of arrangement and energy."
"Ah, the anthems of teenage years. You pick well, Jon," Martin commented with a smile, clearly appreciative of Jon's taste and the thoughtful approach to their music selection.
Jon. Mikha repeated the name in her mind, her curiosity piqued. She found herself wondering about this musician who could so effortlessly analyze and discuss music with such depth. Jon's ability to dissect the song and suggest ways to enhance it revealed a level of expertise and passion that intrigued her.
[Track 04: "The Great Escape" – BOYS LIKE GIRLS]
The opening chords and verse were familiar to Mikha's ears. She knew she had heard this somewhere before, but couldn't place it until Jon sang the chorus.
"Throw it away, forget yesterday
We'll make the great escape
We won't hear a word they say
They don't know us anyway
Watch it burn, let it die
'Cause we are finally free tonight."
The Great Escape. Mikha finally remembered. It was a song from her teenage years. She recalled cheer practice when an old friend would share music with her. This song stood out not just for its catchy melody but for its message of liberation. Mikha found herself contemplating escape once more. She wondered if Jon and Martin had chosen these songs on purpose, as if they knew what she was feeling. But that was impossible, she reasoned.
As the song neared its end, she heard footsteps approaching from the stairway. People might start to wonder what she was doing outside another room and assume she was eavesdropping, which was true but might lead to misunderstandings about her intentions. Though she herself wasn't entirely sure what those intentions were.
Reluctantly, she decided to leave to avoid any awkward questions. She returned to the dance hall and waited for the others. Soon, Maloi came back, handing her the electrolyte drink she had requested
