Lily had done an impressive job of keeping Aimee distracted once Lando and Oscar had headed off to get ready for their first practice session. She'd sat and chatted away about their upcoming move to Monaco and plans for the summer break with very little input from Aimee who was far too lost in her own thoughts.
"Aimee?" Lily prompted, and it was at this point Aimee realised she'd zoned out completely.
"Sorry."
"It's okay." Lily smiled. "I was just asking if you wanted to come for a walk before practice starts?"
Aimee didn't want to go for a walk, the idea of venturing out in to the paddock amongst everyone was her idea of hell. But she also didn't want to be left on her own.
"Sounds good." She answered as brightly as she could manage as she got to her feet.
Her phone was still buzzing away in the bottom of her bag as she picked it up, but Aimee was too afraid to look in case the never ending stream of messages weren't from Lando.
How did Tom even know she was there?
She was going to have to change her phone number. That would surely solve the problem. Although that would mean telling Lando that Tom was texting her again...
"I'm so sorry." She whispered, realising Lily had been talking to her since they'd stepped out of the hospitality and she hadn't heard a word she said.
"Are you alright?" Lily asked. "Really?"
Aimee's phone buzzed again and she fought the urge to just throw it in the bin so she didn't have to think about it.
"I uh... I'm not feeling very well." She said quietly. "I think I might just go back to the hotel after all." Her hand gripped the car keys Lando had given her earlier.
"I can come with you." Lily offered straight away.
Aimee shook her head. "It's fine, you don't have to do that."
"I don't think you should be driving." Lily held her hand out for the car keys. "And Oscar's car only has two seats. If I come back with you then he can bring Lando back later."
Aimee dropped the car keys into Lily's outstretched hand. She was quietly relieved at the idea of not having to drive the expensive car back to the hotel.
"Thanks."
"Come on, let's go." Lily linked her arm though Aimee's and started walking back through the paddock in the direction they'd come that morning. "It's really hot today, maybe it's the heat getting to you."
"Yeah, maybe." Aimee offered weakly.
Thankfully, no one gave them a second glance as they made their way back out to the car. Aimee slid back into the passenger seat as Lily started the car.
"Do you want to just text Lando and let him know we've gone back so they're not looking for us?" Lily asked as she navigated her way back out onto the road.
"Sure." Aimee agreed, pulling her phone out.
The screen was lit up with notifications as she reluctantly unlocked it.
