The ringing of his phone in the pitch black of his bedroom woke Lando from his sleep. Dazed and disoriented he groped around looking for the offending item to silence it. Surely his alarm wasn't going off yet? It was still pitch black outside.
"Hello?" He mumbled, pressing it to his ear after fumbling with the buttons.
"I'm so sorry, are you at home?" The frantic voice on the other end of the line woke him up in an instant.
He lifted the phone away from his ear to look at the screen. It was Aimee, he wasn't imagining it. "Aimee, what's wrong?"
There was muffled sobbing from the other end of the line and what sounded like traffic in the background.
"Aimee where are you?" He pleased, turning on the lights in his bedroom and starting to get dressed. A quick glance at the clock beside his bed revealed it was 2.30am.
"Can I come over?" Her voice trembled. "I'll be like five minutes?"
"Of course." He answered straight away. "Do you need me to come and get you?"
"I uh- I'm not that far away. I'll be okay." She whispered.
"Stay on the phone. You shouldn't be out walking around on your own late at night." He shook his head, pulling on his shoes and heading for the door. He knew which direction the hotel she was staying in was in, if he started walking he could meet her halfway.
There was a quiet hiss of pain on the other end of the phone. "Ah fuck." She cursed.
"Aimee?"
"I uh... I might need to go to the hospital." She said quietly. "I'm just down the street from yours but I don't think I can walk any further." A string of expletives left her mouth as she tried to stand up again.
"Stay there, I'm coming." He instructed, diverting into the garage to grab his car. His question about what she was doing wandering around at this time of night was answered. He was kicking himself, he'd known something was up with her earlier.
She wasn't too hard to spot as he drove around the corner on to the street her hotel was on. She'd only made it 100m away from the hotel entrance, still dressed in her pyjamas and leaning awkwardly against a post as she stood on one leg.
He pulled up beside her and sprung out of the car, arm catching her around the waist as she wobbled. "I've got you, let's just get you in the car, okay?" He said softly.
She just nodded, tears streaming down her face and mixing with the blood running from her forehead. They were definitely going to the hospital.
"Ahhh." She hissed as he deposited her as gently as he could onto the passenger seat of her car.
"What hurts?" He asked, trying to work out what the cause of the scream was so he could avoid doing it again.
"Everything." She sobbed. "My leg."
He looked down at this point and realised that her left leg had swollen to nearly twice the size of her right. He'd put money on it being broken.
"Maybe we should call an ambulance." He faltered, wondering if he really ought to be moving her. He was so unprepared to be dealing with a situation like this, his head was spinning.
"No, please." She begged. "I don't want to cause a scene. I don't want anyone to know." She took a deep breath, grabbing her leg and pulling it into the footwell of the car, biting on her own lip to hold back a scream of pain.
Lando just shut the door and ran around to the drivers side. It was going to be quicker to just take her than try and argue with her at this point. She'd gone white as a sheet and he could see a thin sheen of sweat on her forehead as the adrenaline began to wear off and she felt the full force of the pain.
The drive to the hospital was mercifully short, but the wait after the nurses had quickly whisked her away was not. Lando was left pacing back and forth in the waiting area for what felt like an eternity waiting for news. He didn't even want to think about the fact he'd got to be back at the track for media day in under eight hours.
It was this thought that led him to the realisation that he was going to have to tell Zak what had happened, even if Aimee had specifically asked him not to on so many occasions. He pulled his phone out, realising it was nearly 7am and probably an okay time to get it over and done with.
He only hoped Aimee would eventually forgive him.
As he was about to call Zak the doctor he'd spoken to when they initially came in reappeared and walked towards him. Lando quickly shoved his phone back in his pocket. "How is she?"
"I'll take you through to see her now. She's asking for you." The doctor offered. "The leg is broken, it will need surgery over the next couple of days to pin it. A few broken ribs, a concussion and we've put a few stitches in the wound on her head. There is a small amount of internal bleeding we will keep an eye on but I think it will resolve on its own. Do you know what actually happened? She won't tell us."
Lando opened his mouth and then stopped himself. "I'll talk to her, see what I can find out." He offered. He could guess, but he wanted to hear the truth from Aimee first.
The doctor nodded. "She'll need to stay in until we can schedule the surgery on her leg and probably a couple of days after. She's not going to be able to fly while she's in the cast afterward either. I know she doesn't live locally."
"I'll talk to the team, we'll sort something out." Lando waved a hand dismissively. That was the least of everyone's worries at this point, he was just so relieved she was okay.
"Okay, well she's just down there. Last door on the left." The doctor pointed down the hallway.
"Thank you!" Lando called, already halfway down the hallway to her room.
