He thought she was asleep when he walked into the room, sitting down heavily in the chair beside her bed, as the exhaustion seemed to suddenly catch up with him.
He hesitantly reached out and took her hand in his, studying her battered and bruised face. Her arms didn't look any better than her face and the whole thing made him feel sick to his stomach.
He could probably put two and two together as to what had happened, but for some reason he felt like he needed to hear it from her.
How had they managed to end up here? He should've stopped her from going back to Tom as soon as he found out what was going on. He should've spoken to Zak, had him fired. Anything to get that man as far away from Aimee as possible. Admittedly, she probably never would've forgiven him, but at least she would've been safe.
This was all his fault.
He fished his phone out of his pocket again at the thought of Zak, shooting off a quick message asking if they could talk when he arrived at the track.
Zak had replied quickly, asking if everything was okay. All Lando could do was say he'd explain later.
Just as he was finishing up his message, Aimee's eyes opened and she looked at him in surprise. "Hi." She said softly, not knowing what to say.
"How are you feeling?" He asked, trying to read her facial expression.
"Horrible." She groaned. That was putting it lightly too. Even with all the painkillers she'd been given she still felt like she'd been hit by a bus. "My leg is broken."
"So I hear." Lando said quietly, chewing on his lip as he looked for the right words. "What the fuck happened, Aimee?"
She looked down at where Lando's hand was still holding hers for a moment. How had they reached this point? After all the times she'd pushed him away, how had he become the person she went running to when everything went to shit?
"He found my letter of resignation in my bag." She said quietly, unable to meet Lando's eye.
"He found your... wait. You're leaving?" Lando asked, horrified as he realised what this meant.
"Well, I never actually got as far as giving it to Tracey before Tom found it, so not technically." Aimee shrugged and then hissed in pain. She really, really needed to stop moving.
"Why?" Lando asked, his heart sinking.
"I..." she floundered, looking for the words. "I realised you were right, I guess. I can't live my whole life in fear of him. The other night having dinner with you and driving around, everything was just so normal. It was the first time in years I hadn't been worrying about him."
"I mean I'm so glad you've seen sense but I didn't mean for you to go and leave me." Lando muttered unhappily. "Were you even going to tell me?"
Aimee squeezed his hand gently. "I don't have a choice, Lando. You know this. I can't leave him and continue to work for the same team as him. Imagine what that would be like for me? I'm not leaving you I'm leaving the team for me." She hoped he could understand her logic.
"It doesn't have to be like that." He reminded her. "The only one who should be leaving is him."
"We've been through this so many times." Aimee shook her head. "Please don't make this any harder for me than it has to be."
"I'm not I just..." he stopped, he didn't even know what he was trying to say. His head was spinning. "The doctor said you won't be able to fly for a while."
"Oh." She hadn't thought about that.
"You can come and stay with me for a bit, I'm not going anywhere." He told her.
