Aimee had completely lost all track of what time it was, too engrossed in conversation with Lando as he filled her in about his summer break and Lily and Oscar's move, so she was surprised when Sophie came crashing back through the door several hours later.
"Is it safe to come in?" Sophie called from the hallway. "Everyone is fully clothed and decent?"
"Jesus Christ." Aimee mumbled, her face flushing as she looked at Lando who was laughing. "Yes it's safe, it's mum and dad's living room for gods sake, Soph!"
"Just checking. Don't want to be scarred for life." Sophie laughed. "Mum and Dad will be back in a minute."
"Oh maybe I should go?" Lando asked, looking nervously back and forth between Aimee and Sophie.
"Stay?" Aimee said quietly, grabbing his hand to stop him as he went to stand up.
"You've got to stay, I promised mum and dad they'd get to meet you." Sophie added. "Mum is going to cook dinner."
"Sorry." Aimee mouthed at Lando, well aware that being swept up in her family reunion probably wasn't in his plans.
"So did you two kiss and makeup?" Sophie asked, picking up her shopping bag and heading for the kitchen.
"Sophie! Stop!" Aimee cried, Lando burying his face in her shoulder to hide his laughter.
"I really like her." Lando laughed.
"I can only apologise for the weirdness you're about to experience when my parents get home." Aimee sighed. "I love them, but they're a strange bunch."
"Speaking of weird families... I'd better call my mum and let her know you didn't kill me." Lando joked. "She was worried. She'll be glad to hear you're okay."
"Say hi from me?" Aimee said.
"I'm going back down there, from here. You could come and visit with me if you wanted to?" Lando offered. "I can drop you back here before I go back to Monaco... or you could come with me?"
Aimee felt her stomach flip. "Can we just... one step at a time?" She suggested quietly.
"Of course." Lando gave her leg a gentle squeeze of reassurance.
"I'll go and see what Soph is up to quickly while you call your mum." Aimee said, getting to her feet and heading for the kitchen.
"So?" Sophie asked, pushing the door shut as Aimee walked into the kitchen. "Is everything sorted? You two back together?"
"It's not that simple, Soph. You know that." Aimee shook her head. She suddenly clocked the amount of food her sister was unpacking. "What on earth are you doing? Is there an entire football team coming for dinner I don't know about?"
"Mum sent me to the shop to get stuff for dinner. I think she might be panicking a bit about having the Lando Norris in her house in all honesty."
"Oh god." Aimee groaned. "She's going to make this weird, isn't she?"
"It's Dad I'd be worried about if I were you." Sophie said. "Massive fan."
"What are you talking about? He never watches the races."
"Aimee... he's watched every single race since you started at McLaren. You should've seen how excited him and mum would get when they'd spot you in the background every now and then." Sophie told her. "They tell literally everyone they meet all about you and how proud they are."
"I had absolutely no idea." Aimee said quietly. How had she got the whole thing so wrong? She'd spent years thinking she couldn't come back here, that she had nowhere to turn, and her family had been here all along.
"I'd get back out there if I were you." Sophie jerked her head towards the door. "I'm pretty sure I just heard their car pull up and you don't want to leave poor Lando to fend for himself with Mum."
Aimee hesitated for a second before wrapping her arms around her sister in a bone crushingly tight hug. "Thank you, Soph. For getting him here. I owe you."
"We just want to see you happy, kid." Sophie said softly. "Now get back out there."
By the time Aimee had made it back out of the kitchen she was too late to save poor Lando from her Dad. He'd taken up residence on the other end of the sofa and was alternating between questioning Lando on how he thought the second half of the season would go and asking about Lando's McLaren that sat in the driveway.
"We can take it out for a drive, if you'd like?" Lando offered.
Aimee's dad's face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning.
"You don't have to do that." Aimee interjected.
"I don't mind, we've got time, right?" Lando asked, pulling the car keys out of his pocket.
Aimee's dad was already halfway to the door to put his shoes on. Aimee suspected that everyone in the village he ran into at any point in the next five years was going to be hearing this story on repeat.
"Are you sure you don't mind?" She whispered, catching Lando's arm as he headed for the door.
"Of course I don't." He smiled, wrapping an arm around her waist. "Besides, I'm madly in love with the guys daughter... I'll do whatever I need to do to get in his good books." He winked.
"I think you're already there." Aimee laughed quietly, trying not to freak out about what he'd just said. "Turns out he's been watching all the races, big fan!"
"Oh I know." Lando chuckled. "He knew more about what was going on with the car than half the engineering department from what I've heard so far."
"Don't go too far, and if he's being annoying tell him to shut up." Aimee said.
"Got it." Lando grinned, placing a kiss on her cheek before heading towards the door.
"Lando?" Aimee called after him.
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
He grinned back at her, skipping down the steps and outside to the car to catch up with her dad. She watched on for a moment as he walked around the car, pointing out various things to her dad before the pair of them climbed in and the engine rumbled to life before the car pulled out of the driveway.
