After work, we all headed back to my place, seeking solace in the comfort of familiar surroundings.
"And then he said I reminded him of someone. I'm telling you, this man is setting me up," I exclaimed, sinking into my chair and taking a sip of wine.
"It's definitely weird. Are you sure you didn't catch his eye?" Sarah pondered, her brow furrowed with concern.
"Ha! Like that demon could love. He fired people who practically helped build that company like it was nothing," I retorted bitterly.
"Yeah, but like, it is pretty weird," Sarah agreed, her unease evident.
"He is weird. Let's talk about something else before that man gives me a headache," I suggested, eager to change the subject.
The next day, I followed through with my plan. Arriving a bit early, I cleared out my desk and organized my belongings in the new space. It felt refreshing to have a change of scenery, although I couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness at the thought of no longer chatting with Jake.
As I finished up and headed out, I noticed Mr. Hayes entering the office.
"Ms. L/N," he greeted me.
"Hello, Mr. Hayes," I replied, noticing his gaze briefly flicker over my desk before slowly trailing over me and then looking away.
"Heading back out?" he inquired.
"Yeah, it's only six. I was just going to take a walk for a bit and then clock in at 7. Is something wrong?" I asked, sensing a hint of tension in the air.
"No, nothing," he mumbled, but I couldn't shake the feeling of his eyes lingering on the back of my neck as I walked away.
Descending into the lounge area, I joined Sarah, who greeted me with a puzzled expression.
"What?" I asked, noticing her scrutinizing gaze.
"Oh, nothing. It's just... you're wearing a skirt," she observed, her tone tinged with curiosity.
"I wear them sometimes," I replied, glancing down at the pencil skirt adorning my figure.
"Yeah, but not those kinds of skirts. You really need to wear those more often," Sarah insisted, her tone urging me to reconsider.
Huh, I really don't see the big deal, I thought to myself as I brushed off her suggestion.
Walking past a tall mirror, I caught a glimpse of myself and noticed that the skirt I was wearing was smaller and tighter than usual.
Wow, I guess I didn't notice because of how busy I've been, I realized, momentarily surprised by the change in my appearance.
After chatting with Sarah and Jake for a while, I returned to work and clocked in. Sitting down at my new desk, I began typing, but I couldn't shake the feeling of Mr. Hayes glancing at me every now and then.
Probably making sure I wasn't searching for a new job on Indeed, I reasoned, trying to ignore his scrutiny.
Suddenly, he cleared his throat, and I looked up to see him standing beside me. "Ms. L/N, I'm heading to a meeting. Stay here and finish up the task I just emailed to you," he instructed.
"Yes, sir," I replied obediently, noting his lingering gaze on my legs before he walked away.
I complied with his request until he returned after two and a half hours, accompanied by Mr. Thompson leaving.
"Is that..." I began, trailing off in disbelief.
"Yes, it is. One of the best employees of this company, as you said. I offered him his job back, but he declined," Sarah explained.
"He did say he wanted to spend more time with his family," Jake added.
"I also offered a few others their jobs back, and all have accepted," Mr. Hayes confirmed, casting a meaningful glance in my direction.
"Oh, that's wonderful," I responded, although I couldn't shake the feeling of unease.
As Mr. Hayes returned to his desk, I checked the time and stood up. "I'm going on my lunch break," I announced.
"Alright," Mr. Hayes mumbled distractedly.
Finding Sarah and Jake waiting for me, I relayed what had just happened with Mr. Thompson.
"Yeah, Mr. Hayes offered his job back, but he rejected it. He offered others theirs back as well," Sarah informed us.
"Oh wow, how's the new position?" Jake inquired, his gaze wandering to my waist and legs. Sarah reacted swiftly, scolding him.
"Ow," he muttered, chastened. "You've never worn something like that before."
"I know, I think it shrunk in the washer or something," I explained, trying to dismiss his curiosity.
The next day, I returned to my usual attire, double-checking this morning to make sure. As I walked in and sat down at my desk, I couldn't shake the feeling that Mr. Hayes looked disappointed.
