I sat down, deep in thought, contemplating my situation. As I stood up and began to walk out, I unexpectedly encountered Hayes sitting down, a glass in hand.
"Darling, why are you up at night?" he inquired, his voice tinged with concern.
"Why are you awake and drinking?" I snapped, feeling a surge of frustration.
"A good question," he sighed, his expression pensive.
The next day, I awoke to the sound of distant voices. Rolling out of bed, I made my way towards the source of the conversation, only to find my mother engaged in discussion with Hayes' father.
"Oh dear! Do you really think it'll be best if they just elope?" my mother's words cut through me like a knife, filling me with a sickening feeling.
"I know my son very well. If he thinks she's too stressed out, then he would call it off," Hayes' father chimed in, his voice filled with a sense of authority.
Is that Hayes' father? I couldn't help but wonder, feeling a surge of resentment towards the man who raised him.
"Your son is a saint compared to my—" My mother's words were abruptly cut off by my sharp interjection.
"Shut up," I snapped, gritting my teeth in frustration as I struggled to contain my anger.
"Oh, there she is!" My mother exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with faux concern.
"Why are you here?" I demanded, my anger escalating with each passing moment as I locked eyes with her.
"Well then, such a way to talk to your mother," she retorted, attempting to guilt-trip me.
"Do you still think you deserve the title of mother?" I shot back, the words leaving a bitter taste in my mouth as I challenged her, daring her to justify her actions.
"Darling, I think you need to be away from them," Hayes intervened, appearing beside me and gently guiding me into a different room, his touch offering a sense of comfort amidst the chaos of emotions swirling within me.
"Why is she here?" I asked, my voice laced with bewilderment as I took in the unexpected scene before me.
He let out a heavy sigh.
"I'm sorry, my father just does things without talking to me first," he explained, regret evident in his tone.
Furrowing my brow, I pressed further. "And what is this about eloping?"
The question seemed to render him immobile, shock etching across his features as he stood in stunned silence.
The weighted pause stretched uncomfortably.
Exasperation bubbled up within me. "So now you've gone deaf and mute on me?" I scoffed, turning away to hide the hurt his lack of response provoked.
Finally, he found his voice again.
"No, it's not like that..."
