The next few weeks passed by in a blur of endless work and not enough sleep. Hayes had landed a huge new account, and we were both putting in grueling hours to get everything ready for the big presentation.
I stifled a yawn as I squinted at my computer screen, the words starting to blur together.
God, I'm so tired.
How late have I been here?
Glancing at the clock, I was surprised to see it was already after 11pm.
No wonder I felt so drained.
"You're still here."
I jumped slightly at the sound of Hayes' voice, turning to see him leaning against the doorframe of my office. Even disheveled, with his tie askew and shirt half-untucked, he looked unfairly handsome.
How does he manage that?
"I could say the same to you," I countered, giving him a tired smile.
"Thought you would've headed home hours ago."
He shrugged, pushing off the doorframe and ambling further into the room.
"And leave you here slaving away alone? Perish the thought."
Despite my fatigue, I felt my cheeks flush a little at his teasing tone. Hayes had a way of making me feel flustered, even after all this time.
Get it together.
"Well, I'm just about to call it a night," I fibbed, shutting down my computer. Like hell I'm leaving until this is perfect.
Hayes arched an eyebrow at the obvious lie but didn't call me out. Instead, he closed the distance between us and placed his hands on my shoulders, gently massaging the tense muscles.
"You're working too hard, darling," he murmured, dropping a kiss on the top of my head. "This account is important, but not as important as your wellbeing."
I felt myself melting into his touch, the familiar scent of his cologne surrounding me. Maybe it was the late hour and exhaustion making me sentimental, but in that moment, all the recent unease I'd been feeling towards Hayes faded away.
"I'm fine, really," I protested half-heartedly, even as I leaned back against his solid frame. "I want to help make this launch amazing for you."
Hayes hummed in acknowledgment, his nimble fingers continuing to knead the knots from my shoulders and neck.
"Well, then I suppose we're both stuck here burning the midnight oil."
I tilted my head back to gaze up at him, a teasing lilt in my voice.
"Is that an order, Mr. Boss Man?" Just go with it, enjoy this time together.
He chuckled low in his throat, bending down to brush his lips against mine.
"It's whatever you want it to be, Miss Workaholic."
Despite the late hour and fatigue weighing me down, I felt desire uncurl low in my belly at his words, at the heated look in his eyes. Suddenly the office seemed much too warm, the air thick with unspoken promises.
Maybe I need this release after all the stress...
