Days turned into weeks, and the chasm between Hayes and me widened with each passing moment. At work, we maintained a facade of professionalism, but at home, our interactions were sparse and strained.

The man who had once been my rock now felt like a stranger, and I couldn't shake the image of that night from my mind.

How did we get here?

One evening, after another long day at the office, I arrived home to find Hayes already there. He was seated in the living room, staring at his phone, but he looked up as I entered. I didn't acknowledge him, instead heading straight for the bedroom to change out of my work clothes.

I can't keep avoiding this.

But what choice do I have?

I emerged from the bedroom a little later, intending to make myself a simple dinner and retreat back into my own thoughts. But as I stepped into the kitchen, I heard Hayes's footsteps behind me.

"Can we talk?" he asked, his voice soft and tentative.

Not this again.

"I'm tired, Hayes," I replied without turning around. "I just want to be alone."

He didn't move. "Please, just hear me out."

I sighed, turning to face him. "What is there to say? You did something terrible, and I don't know how to move past it."

Hayes's face contorted with anguish. Before I could react, he dropped to his knees in front of me, his eyes glistening with tears.

"Please, forgive me," he pleaded, his voice breaking. "I can't lose you. I'm so sorry for what I did. I was scared, and I acted without thinking. Please, give me another chance."

Is this really happening?

Seeing him like this, so vulnerable and desperate, tugged at my heart. But the fear and betrayal I felt were still too raw. I took a step back, my arms crossing defensively.

"Hayes, you stabbed someone," I said, my voice shaking. "How can I just forget that? How can I trust you again?"

He bowed his head, tears streaming down his face.

"I don't know how to make this right. But I'll do anything—anything—to earn your forgiveness. I love you more than anything, and I can't bear the thought of losing you."

Why does this have to be so complicated?

"Love isn't supposed to be like this," I whispered, my own tears welling up. "I don't know if I can ever feel safe with you again."

He looked up at me, his eyes full of pain and regret.

"I'll prove to you that I'm not a monster. I promise. Just... please, don't shut me out. Give me a chance to make things right."

Can I really do this?

Can I find it in my heart to forgive him?

I wiped my eyes, taking a deep breath. "I don't know if I can forgive you right now. But I won't shut you out completely. I need time, Hayes. Time to process everything."

He nodded, still on his knees.

"Thank you," he said quietly. "I'll do whatever it takes to earn back your trust."

I offered him a hand, helping him to his feet. The weight of the past weeks hung heavily between us, but for the first time in a long while, I felt a glimmer of hope. It was faint, but it was there.

"Let's take it one day at a time," I said, my voice firm. "No promises, but we'll see where it goes."

Hayes nodded, a small, hopeful smile breaking through his tears. "One day at a time," he agreed.

As we stood there, facing an uncertain future, I knew the road ahead would be difficult. But maybe, just maybe, we could find a way back to each other.

One day at a time.
