Takes place in the evening of the same day, chapter 7.

The bustling Chicago PD department was a stark contrast to the snowy streets outside. Upstairs in the intelligence unit, the team gathered around Adam's table, evidence from their latest case spread before them. Hank Voight stood near the board, his focused gaze on his team.

“All right, listen up,” Voight began, his voice commanding attention. “We’ve got a tough one. A series of armed robberies near the 1st Avenue. Three dead including a 10 year old. We need to move faster and hunt them down before anyone else gets hurt.” He spoke whilst distributing the photos.

Kim leaned in, her brow furrowed as she examined the photos of the crime scenes. “Do we have any leads? Witnesses?”

“Not much,” Kevin replied jogging upstairs, frustration evident in his tone. “They’re masked and armed to the teeth. We’ve got a couple of grainy security cam shots, but nothing solid but as far as we know, it's a group of three.”

Adam Ruzek, leaning back in his chair, sighed. “It’s like they’re ghosts. In and out in minutes. No clear footages, nada! They know what they’re doing.”

Hailey remained silent, her thoughts elsewhere. The unexpected encounter with Jay earlier that day weighed heavily on her mind. She shook her head trying to get her focus back to the case. She glanced up, catching Voight’s eye. He gave her a subtle nod, acknowledging her distraction without calling her out.

“We’ll divide into teams,” Voight continued. “Ruzek and Atwater, hit the streets. See if any of our informants have heard anything. Burgess, Upton, I want you to go over the footage again. Look for anything we might have missed.”

As the team dispersed, Hailey stood there. Kim had already walked down the stairs when she realised that the blonde wasn't behind her. She took a few steps back and approached Hailey, concern etched on her face.

“Hey, you okay?” Kim asked gently. Hailey nodded, though her expression was conflicted. “Yeah, it’s just... seeing Jay back. It brought back a lot of painful memories.”

Kim placed a comforting hand on Hailey’s shoulder. “I get it. It’s weird seeing him after all this time, especially when you thought he was.....”

Hailey’s gaze hardened slightly. “Dead? Yeah, but he's alive with shiny new life and a shiny new trophy. Didn’t take him long to move on, did it?”
