The soft glow of dawn filtered through the curtains of Jay and Atalia’s Chicago apartment. Jay was already awake, savoring the rare tranquility of a morning off. He slipped out of bed quietly and made his way to the kitchen, the promise of a peaceful breakfast hanging in the air. Atalia stirred as he brewed coffee, her groggy voice calling out from the bedroom.
“Good morning,” she mumbled, rubbing her eyes as she walked into the kitchen. “What’s cooking?”
“Thought we could enjoy a quiet breakfast together,” Jay replied with a smile, handing her a steaming cup of coffee. “Got some eggs and toasts. Hope you’re hungry.”
Atalia smiled, accepting the coffee. “Sounds perfect. It’s been a while since we had a normal morning.”
They worked side by side, the kitchen filled with the comforting sounds of breakfast preparation. Jay cracked eggs into a pan while Atalia set the table and toasted some bread. Their conversation was light and full of playful banter.
“Remember that time we tried to make pancakes and ended up with a kitchen disaster?” Jay teased as he flipped the eggs.
Atalia laughed. “I do. Was that in Rome?"
Jay chuckled as he remembered that day, "Yeah, Rome '27. I think the smoke alarm went off three times. We should probably stick to simpler recipes.”
Atalia grinned. “Agreed. But it’s nice to have moments like these, even if it’s just a quiet breakfast.”
The two sat down to eat, their talks varying from the weather and to the way Jay let out a sigh every time he munched on his food.
Just as they were finishing their breakfast, Jay’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and saw it was a secure line from Code Eleven.
“Looks like we’re about to be pulled back into the fray.” Jay said, answering the call and putting it on speaker.
The voice on the other end was terse and urgent. “Jay, Atalia—there’s a new case. We need you to fly to Spain immediately.”
Jay exchanged a glance with Atalia, who had already tensed at the sudden shift in their plans. “What’s wrong?” Jay asked, his tone serious.
