The winter wind cut through the streets of Chicago like a blade, whipping around the buildings and sending shivers down the spine of anyone brave enough to venture outside.

Jay Halstead, who once used to roam around these streets was now an Code Eleven agent with a new life and a new partner. He suddenly didn't feel accustomed to the chilly Chicago weather and adjusted his coat, turned around to glance at Atalia, who walked behind him with a steady stride.

They had just wrapped up a tense meeting with the Head Commissioner of Code Eleven and were now headed to a nearby coffee shop to debrief. Jay’s mind was elsewhere, almost lost in the echoes of his past. His past.... as if it was on cue, what was supposed to a typical day for them flipped upside down as destiny had other ideas.

Jay's heart almost stopped as they turned the corner.

In front of them stood the familiar faces of the Chicago PD team, his old team- Hank Voight, Kim Burgess, Kevin Atwater, Adam Ruzek, and, most painfully of all, Hailey Upton. Jay’s breath caught in his throat. He hadn’t expected to see them here, he had hoped he wouldn't see them ever. It had been weeks since their arrival in Chicago and this moment had crossed Jay's mind a hundred times.

Voight, with his commanding pressure was the first one to notice Jay. His eyes narrowed, a mix of caution and surprise crossing his face. “Halstead,” he said, his voice low and calm.

Jay’s mouth was parched. He tried to muster a response but found himself at a loss for words. With a strained voice, he managed to finally speak, “Voight."

Hailey looked up, her eyes widening as she met Jay’s gaze. The pain in her expression was unmistakable, but she quickly masked it with a forced, tight smile. After months of waiting for Jay, she stopped upon a mental breakdown. Safe to say, she wasn't a bit happy to see him.

Atalia placed a hand gently on Jay’s arm, her touch grounding him in the present. The hand placement not going unnoticed by the team. She cleared her throat softly, then addressed the group kindly with an air of professionalism. “Hi, I’m Atalia Alvarez. I’m Jay’s partner.”

Kim Burgess and Kevin Atwater exchanged glances, their faces a mix of curiosity and wariness. Partner? Adam Ruzek, studied Jay with a look that spoke volumes, a blend of old friendship, unspoken questions and a slight judgement maybe even betrayal.
