Outer Banks, Maybank's house

I was having breakfast with JJ in the living-room, our father watching the news on television, when we heard someone knocking at our door. It wasn't usual, since our father didn't have anyone who would have wanted to visit, and our friends knew our house wasn't the most welcoming place they could find to hang out. Our dad got up after staring at us with a confused gaze which we all shared.

He opened the door and as all of our eyes landed on two policemen, I immediately turned to look at JJ, who understood what was going on too.

"Excuse me, sir, we're officers from the local police department. We're conducting an investigation regarding a fire that occurred in the neighborhood last night. We have evidence provided by surveillance cameras that your son is connected to the incident. Due to the nature of the crime, we need to arrest him right now," one of them told our father, who didn't even seem surprised.

My eyes filled up with tears and JJ slowly got up, not even fighting since there was nothing he could do to escape them. Both my father and I watched JJ being handcuffed before they took him to the car which was parked outside. Our father sighed and muttered insults as he went back inside our house, but I followed the two officers, worried.

"Hey, when can we go get him?" I asked.

"We'll keep him for a little while, we need to interrogate him first," he responded.

They pushed JJ inside the car and without any further explanation, they drove away, taking my brother along. I knew what coming back inside would probably mean for me, so I just grabbed my surfboard and my bag and hurried to the beach, escaping my house before my father would lose his mind completely.

Since my shift only began around 4pm, I spent most of the afternoon surfing alone, letting the sun burn my already tanned skin. I let the sound of crashing waves relax me, my mind chasing all of the dark thoughts ruining my mood. JJ had to face the consequences of his actions, and even though I worried about him, it was only fair that way, he had to pay for burning down Topper's car.

After long hours of fighting against the waves, I made my way to my workplace, where hungry and thirsty customers were already waiting. I couldn't say that I was excited about working, but at least it would occupy my mind and I wouldn't rot in my bedroom, wondering if JJ was fine.

I was cleaning the counter when I caught glimpse of people walking in the empty restaurant, apparently ignoring the closed sign on the entry door. I was the last one in the restaurant since it was my turn to close the restaurant and I wouldn't leave until it was perfectly clean. I sighed and kept on focusing on my tasks, wondering how people could be so stupid and believe a restaurant was still open for customers at almost two in the morning.
