I walked into John B's house, and the room fell silent, which made me roll my eyes. They all looked so embarrassed, as if I were some kind of monster instead of their best friend who simply felt betrayed. I sat down on the couch between JJ and Pope, staring at them before crossing my arms over my chest.
"So, what now? Are we just never going to talk to each other again?" I asked rhetorically.
"We thought you were mad," Kiara said quietly.
I nodded. "I was, but I'm not anymore. I'm just sad that you guys kept things from me," I sighed.
Pope placed a hand on my shoulder, biting his lower lip, fidgeting slightly and avoiding eye contact. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his eyes filled with guilt, obviously feeling remorseful. "We won't do that again," he promised in a solemn tone.
I shrugged and glanced over at my brother, who was strangely quiet for once, as if he had run out of arguments; something very rare for him. We hadn't seen each other since I'd stormed out of the Chateau the day before. Before I could speak up, JJ pulled me into a tight hug, squeezing me so hard that I had to push him away. Everyone burst into laughter, knowing just how much we hated physical affection when it came to each other.
"At least you were right, Pope. Now we can fully enjoy our summer together: no problems, no Kooks," I cheered.
"I declare summer holiday season officially open," JJ announced.
We chuckled as John B went to grab us beers, and we started chatting about our plans for the next few days. While JJ and Kiara argued over whether we should go surfing or fishing, I heard the sound of a motorbike approaching, which was odd since the Chateau wasn't near any roads. I squinted, trying to make out who it was, and when I recognized the man, my heart started racing.
"Guys, this doesn't look good. We need to go inside," I warned, but they were too busy arguing to hear me. "Guys!"
As soon as they caught sight of the man, everyone rushed inside, unsure of where to hide or what to do. John B, who had been grabbing beers from the fridge, looked confused as we frantically barricaded the front door. "What are you guys doing?" he asked.
"Barry's here," Kiara said, breathless.
"And he has a gun," Pope added.
We all crouched down or lay flat on the floor, trying to stay out of sight, even though Barry probably knew we were inside. JJ, clearly nervous, placed his hand over his heart like he always did when he was worried and whispered something before it was too late. "Guys, I need to tell you something before we die," he began.
"JJ, stop," Pope snapped.
"No, listen. I didn't technically steal our dad's drugs. I stole the drugs Barry was going to sell to our dad: straight from the source," he confessed, and we all felt like our souls had left our bodies.
