Outer Banks, the Chateau July 11th, 2020 4:29pm
JJ and I arrived at the Chateau, where we joined our friends that had apparently started smoking blunts and drinking beers without us. They were by the terrace when we got closer, so Kiara waved at us and John B got up. He pulled me in a warm and unexpected hug, making me giggle softly.
"Hi John B," I mumbled.
"I'm so glad you're not working today, I'm so tired of knowing we're all having fun here while you're being these Kook's slave," he spat out as he unwrapped his arms from around me.
"Yeah, I'm sure they treat you like shit, they have no respect," Kiara voiced, sighing as she criticized the people she had been friends with for a little while.
Indeed, Kiara had not always hung out with us, since she lived on Figure-Eight and had even been schooled with them. She had started hanging out with the Kook Princess, Sarah Cameron, and spent most of her time at the country club or in fancy parties. But after Sarah and Kiara argued over a birthday party Kie wasn't invited at, she gave up on the Kook side of her life.
I laughed. "I'm sorry guys but I'm working tonight as well. " I told them.
"Besides, she's not their slave, she's being paid for serving them," Pope clarified, which was true.
We all took a seat and I lit up a blunt, leaning back, feeling the warmth of this hot summer day radiating. JJ stole Pope's beer, making Kie's laugh ring out like a melody, before Pope grabbed it back and left JJ with no other option than going to the fridge to get something to drink. The Chateau was the place we always gathered at, because no adult would tell us what to do and not do. Ever since Big John had disappeared at sea during a storm, we had never heard from him again, and John B had been forced to live on his own.
He was almost never alone, because there was always one of us keeping him company, and when we couldn't come, he was the one coming over. Well, not at JJ and I's place for obvious parental reasons, but he visited Kiara and Pope often. I guess we had helping going through this tough period of his life, because even if he was still grieving his father's death, he was slowly getting better.
"So what do you guys want to do tonight? I was thinking we could go surfing and then light up a fire and everything," Kie offered.
"Or we could try to sneak in the Country Club like old times," JJ told us, smirking as his eyes landed on me.
Before I worked there, we used to secretly get in the Country Club and party with the Kooks. Nobody even asked who we were or bothered us, we only had to steal a member card and act confident. We knew how to steal, and how to act. But when I was hired as a waitress, I begged my friends not to do that again, because even if I wouldn't be involved, if I saw them partying through the crowd of customers, I'd be an accomplice.
"No way! Besides, tonight the Country Club hosts the 20th anniversary of Cameron Development so trust me, security will know you're not invited just by looking at you," I voiced, smiling since I just knew it would annoy him.
