Outer Banks, Maybank's house
August 2nd, 2020
10:31amWhen I opened my eyes and realized it wasn't a dream, Rafe was actually sleeping next to me, I panicked. I shook him awake gently at first, but when he didn't stir, I shook him more firmly. He groaned, and I noticed his eyes fluttering open before they landed on me.
"Hi," he greeted, his voice raspy.
"Hey, you need to go," I said immediately, making him sit up and look at me more carefully.
"Shit, your lip is swoll-" he started to say.
"Rafe! Please, leave now," I cut him off, my voice sharper than intended.
He frowned, clearly offended by my urgency. Honestly, if I were him, I would've felt the same. After taking me home last night and helping me after the altercation with my father, I was treating him like he was an inconvenience, which wasn't fair. But if he stayed any longer, my father could catch him, or worse, JJ could see him. Besides, the truth was, I was ashamed that Rafe had seen me hurt, vulnerable, and desperate.
"Chill! What's wrong with you?" he asked, his annoyance evident.
"I'm sorry. Thank you for everything, really, but you can't stay," I said, softer this time.
He nodded, disappointed, before getting up slowly and putting his shoes back on. I sighed, burying my face in my hands as he gathered his things, clearly upset with me since he didn't even glance my way. I stood up and opened the window for him to climb out, which he did without a word. Just when I thought he was going to leave without saying goodbye, he turned around, standing outside the window.
"Be safe," he said quietly, and I nodded in response.
After he left, I showered and did my best to hide the bruises and cuts with makeup. I put on a swimsuit and some clothes to join the Pogues at the Château. They'd planned to spend the day out on the marsh, fishing and swimming, and I knew it was the best way to relax and enjoy the summer heat. As I walked towards John B's house, my mind kept drifting back to last night, to Rafe, and how comfortable it was having him next to me.
Just as I neared John B's place, I heard the unmistakable sound of a motorcycle approaching. My heart stopped when I saw Barry parking his bike. My first instinct was to run, but it was too late, he was already walking toward me, pulling off his helmet. My face went pale, and my body started to tremble with fear.
"Hey, hey, hey," Barry greeted with a smirk.
"Hi," I managed to say, my voice shaky.
"Relax, Pogue. I'm not gonna hurt you. I'd be in too much trouble if I did," he said with a soft but disgusting chuckle. "I wanted to make a deal with you"
"A deal?" I asked, my heart racing.
He stepped closer, and I instinctively took a step back, worried about what he could do next, since next time I had seen him, he had a gun. He raised his hands, as if to show he meant no harm, but it wasn't enough to fully reassure me.
