Outer Banks, the Beach August 21st, 2020 1:46pm
I arrived at the beach and ran toward John B, who was sitting on the burning sand, watching our friends surf. I waved at him with a bright smile before approaching and sitting down next to him. My eyes flicked briefly to Kie, JJ, and Pope riding the waves before returning to John B.
"So, how are you?" he asked, his gaze naturally drifting to the scar revealed by my bathing suit.
"Good. It almost doesn't hurt anymore," I reassured him.
He frowned, brushing a strand of hair from my face as his eyes lingered on my neck. At first, he looked confused, almost concerned, but after a few seconds, he burst into laughter, nudging me playfully.
"This from Barry too?" he teased, smirking as he pointed at my neck.
"Shit," I muttered, covering my neck with my hand. I hated Rafe more than ever for this.
"Shouldn't you be at home, relaxing? Taking it easy for a while?" he asked, raising a brow.
"Rafe's bed is more comfortable than mine," I lied smoothly. "Doctors said it was better for my back and stomach"
John B snorted, his laugh ringing out. "Why don't I believe you?" he asked rhetorically.
I shrugged, giggling, as he draped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer. I rested my head against him, letting my gaze wander to the waves where our friends were still surfing. The ocean roared as it crashed a few meters away, but sitting there with John B, it felt quiet for a moment.
"I never thanked you for saving my life," I said softly. "Thank you, John B"
"Come on, you'd have done the same for us. All I did was call an ambulance. JJ and Rafe did the hard part," he replied.
I stayed with my head on his shoulder until I noticed the others swimming back to shore, waving at us as they came closer. I sat up, smiling playfully at John B.
"How's it going with Sarah?" I asked.
"Pretty good," he admitted, but his tone was hesitant. "I'm just worried Kie's never going to accept her"
"She will, Kie loves you. She just wants you to be happy," I said confidently.
"You sound like JJ," he laughed. "He said pretty much the same thing about you and Rafe"
"Almost," I laughed with him, knowing JJ hadn't been so simple about it.
"Yeah, he added a thing or two," John B said with a sly grin.
The others finally reached us, their laughter filling the air as they raced across the sand. Pope and JJ were too busy trying to trip each other to win, so Kie beat them easily. We clapped for her as she arrived.
