Outside of training with Logan I spent my next weeks hanging out with Ororo and getting to know the rest of my fellow X-Men to combat my loneliness. Of course none of their friendships fulfilled me quite like the one that Logan and I previously shared. I enjoyed having these people in my life, learning their quirks and such, but something about Logan made me feel at home.
Ororo knocked on my door, to which I naturally opened, following with a quick greeting. "The professor wants us to meet him in his office, he says its urgent" She informed.
I followed with a nod, "Alright, let's head over then" I responded, following her out the door.
In recent weeks, the professor had in-fact located the artifact, but by the time the hieroglyphics and what other little clues we had were solved, Magneto beat us to the punch. So far, he's located Magneto's lair using Cerebro, discovering that currently they were slumped on how to activate the artifacts powers.
Ororo and I strode into the office, giving a nod to our fellow X-Men, and we took our place. As we waited for the final few to file in, I felt a pair of eyes drilling into the back of my head. I took a look back, to see Logan staring blankly at me, standing alone in a corner of the room. I felt bad cutting off our friendship, but after he had completely iced me out after I had been vulnerable with him, it made me realize out relationship shouldn't go further than being colleagues . Although he tried to hide it, I could feel his regrets and more that I couldn't quite pinpoint.
A puff of smoke appeared, and Kurt finally arrived in the office and I turned my attention towards the professor, waiting for him to commence the meeting. "As of now, we are one step ahead of Magneto," he started, crossing his arms on his desk, "With our current information we contain the knowledge to neutralize the artifact, our only obstacle is locating it within Magneto's underground lair." He informed, a worried confidence radiating off of him.
"And how exactly are we going to do that?" The smug voice of Logan interrupted.
He'd developed more of an attitude lately, although from what I've heard he's always had a little bit of a mouth, he'd just been able to keep himself more quiet. Scott scoffed, rolling his eyes at him. "We'll need to do a stealth attack" Storm stated, interrupting the newfound tension.
"Precisely" the professor agreed, and he started laying out the game plan.
--
We entered the jet, all of us adorned in our black suits with an X shaped directly in the middle. This was the first time I had used mine for an actual mission. I sat in the jet, recalling the plan. Nightcrawler, Cyclops and I would infiltrate the lair, while Professor X would direct us to where he thought the artifact was located. Nightcrawler was the key piece, as he would help get us in undetected, I was to use my powers to quickly and silently disarm any one of Magneto's followers that we came across, and Cyclops was the muscle incase anything got out of hand. Beast would wait inside the Jet with the professor while Jean, Storm and Wolverine would wait outside incase anything went south. Not to mention Jean was also in charge are using her telekinesis to set off the alarms in the far area of the lair to create a diversion.
I was admittedly nervous, I sat strapped into the jet beside Storm, and I blankly ran my thumbs over the lilac embroidery of my suit. It was my first mission, it was definitely a dangerous starting point. The jet stopped in mid air, we had arrived. "We'll hover here until you guys return" Beast declared, "Good luck."
Nightcrawler quickly teleported us down to our entrance point, "Be safe in there" Storm warned.
"We will, don't worry" I reassured.
I looked towards Jean giving her a quick nod, she returned the gesture, wishing us good luck. I turned my gaze over to Wolverine, my eyes lingering on him for a moment, and he gave a weak half-smile before we departed. We entered the lair through a ramped area, presumable where vehicles and other machinery would enter, and a very distant alarm began blaring; it was go time. The walls looked to be made entirely of steal, but it couldn't be if the Professor was able to use Cerebro to try and pinpoint the artifacts location.
I walked slightly behind, taking in my surroundings and we traveled silently using the sound and lights of the alarm to cover us. I made sure to focus on if I could feel anyone approaching. There a silent communication between the boys and I, giving small nods and making gestures to communicate in order avoid attention. The professors voice rang in outs heads, "All seems well thus far, keep headed down that hallways and then take the final left turn, there will be a room directly after on the right that I cannot see into, I believe the artifact is in there."
We paused, and Cyclops made a gesture to continue going. We continued down the long hallway and the lights and buzzing of the alarm ceased, I suddenly felt a way of aggression approaching. I took a few quick steps to catch up to Cyclops, and I grabbed his shoulder before warning, "People are coming."
As if on queue, we heard the footsteps, and the emotions of fear, anger and devotion became stronger. I spun around, looking down an alternating hallway and there I saw men running towards us with guns, ready to fire. I quickly channeled my energy towards them, aiming to absorb their individual vitality to cause them to fall unconscious. Just as I started to become an emotional sponge, I saw a quick flash of red, resulting in my losing my focus and I watched as the men fell backwards.
"Way to go Cyclops, there goes our cover!" I criticized, turning an annoyed gaze over to him.
"No wonder you and the Wolverine got along so well, everything has to go your way" He groaned.
I shot him an angry glare, "Almost like we literally planned for me to disarm them, not for you to send them flying."
Cyclops grimaced, opening his mouth the argue before quickly being interrupted by Nightcrawler grabbing us and teleporting us towards the end of the hall. "We need to focus" he insisted, now taking the lead.
I continued to follow him, turning left as the Professor had instructed, and then just as he had suspected after a quick right, we were face to face with a door. "Ok, this is it" I exhaled, relieved to have reached the final destination.
"Nightcrawler, can you get us in?" Cyclops asked, turning towards the tailed man.
"I can for sure try" He responded, grabbing hold of us and sure enough, teleporting us in the room.
The room was made of mirrors, and it the middle sat tall pedestal with various other mirrors shelves and such along the sides. "I'll check out the pedestal, you guys keep looking around" I volunteered, considering it the most obvious choice.
The others nodded, and I stepped towards the pedestal, I eyed the top, at first only seeing my own reflection, but upon further observation I noticed there was a small square ever so slightly raised on top, I ran my fingers along it and paused. I whipped around, suddenly sensing an army of followers approaching. "Guy's we need to-" I started to warn them, only for giant metal walls to fall on either side of me and the ground to begin lowering. "Cyclops! Nightcrawler!" I shouted, but to no avail.
It was too late.
