The next morning I awoke to the soft, golden light of the sun filtering through the curtains, bathing the room in a warm and calm glow. I blinked, my eyes adjusting to the light as I slowly sat up. My body still ached from the intensity of the nightmare, but I felt different today. The weight that had been pressing down on my shoulders for weeks felt lighter.
I glanced over at Logan, still asleep beside me, his face softened in rest. For a moment, I let myself take in the sight of him, the steady rise and fall of his chest, the comfort of his presence. But today, I knew it was time to do more than just find solace in his presence. Today, I needed to find strength in myself.
I slipped out of bed carefully, trying not to wake him. As I moved, a sense of determination coursed through me—a resolve I hadn't felt since before Magneto's lair. I was done letting the fear win. Done letting that amulet and its memories control me.
Logan stirred, his eyes fluttering open as he sensed my movement. He blinked up at me, his expression shifting to concern. "You okay, darlin'?"
I nodded, a small smile tugging at my lips. "I'm more than okay, I'm ready, Logan."
He sat up, studying my face for a moment, before giving a slow, understanding nod. "Let's do this".
We stood, quickly freshening ourselves up before making out way to towards the Professors office. The hallway felt longer than usual, every step echoing with the weight of what was to come. My stomach churned with nervousness, and I felt Logans hand brush against mine, a quiet reminder that he was right beside me. I took a breath, and squeezed his fingers briefly, drawing strength from his presence.
When we reached the office, the door opened before we could even knock. The Professor sat in his chair, his gaze calm but knowing. "I could sense you were ready," he said gently, his eyes meeting mine with a hint of pride.
Storm stood beside him, her expression both concerned and supportive. "Are you sure about this, (Y/n)?" she asked, stepping forward, her voice steady but soft. "You've been through a lot... no one would blame you if—"
"No," I interrupted, shaking my head. "I've let the amulet have power over me for too long. I'm done being afraid, done letting it control my life." My voice grew stronger with each word, my heart racing, but not with fear—with a sense of purpose.
The Professor nodded. "Very well. We've prepared the room where it's being kept. Remember, Haze, you control the energy this time. It will respond to your intent."
I nodded firmly in response, eager yet nervous to face the task ahead, but I knew I was ready. The four of us made our way to the room, the heavy tension evident from the moment we stepped inside.
The amulet was sat on a pedestal, similar to the one that stood firmly in Magnetos lair. I could feel power the black depth that the gem held, although instead of an ominous pull, there was a challenge—one that I was ready to face.
Logan stood by my side, and I could feel his silent encouragement—his hope radiating off of him. I took a deep breath, and stepped close, my hand extending towards the amulet. I could feel it pulse slightly, a soft glow emanating from its center, like it was waiting.
I closed my eyes, focusing inward, calling upon the calm within myself. I envisioned the darkness it had spread, the fear it had sown, and with every ounce of my being, I rejected it. I was not afraid anymore.
The air around me crackled with energy, a tension building that was almost palpable. The familiar runes that had been etched into the pedestal began to glow the same eerie blood-red color as before as they climbed their way upwards. The amulet began to pulse, almost excitedly, awaiting its true power to be returned.
