After a long day at the agency and narrowly escaping another grueling combat session with Kunikida, I found myself following Dazai as we left the office. The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden glow over Yokohama's skyline. Despite the fatigue weighing on my body, there was an undeniable thrill bubbling inside me. Another ability session was about to begin—both exhilarating and daunting.
As we walked, Dazai glanced at me with his usual enigmatic smile, a mix of mischief and something deeper. "How are you feeling, Y/N-chan? Ready for today's session?"
I hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah, I guess. But, um, Dazai... could you go easy on me? I'm still sore from yesterday's training."
He chuckled softly, a sound that seemed to carry both amusement and sympathy. "No promises. But don't worry, today's session won't be as physically demanding. We're focusing more on control and precision." His tone took on a rare seriousness, piquing my curiosity.
We arrived at a secluded area near the docks, away from prying eyes. The soft murmur of the waves and the distant hum of the city created a strangely calming atmosphere. Dazai stopped and turned to face me, his expression serious. "Alright, Y/N-chan, show me what you've got. Use your ability to lift that container over there." He pointed to a large metal container a few meters away.
Taking a deep breath, I felt the familiar surge of power course through me. This was only the second time I'd used my ability with such control. Part of me was terrified—what if I lost control again? Focusing on the container, I extended my hand, and the air around me seemed to ripple. Slowly, the container began to lift off the ground, hovering a few feet in the air. I clenched my fist, tightening my grip on the gravitational field surrounding it.
(Note: I've slightly tweaked Y/N's ability so she doesn't need to touch objects to manipulate their gravity; she can simply focus on them. This also applies to Chuuya.)
"Good, good," Dazai encouraged, nodding approvingly. "Now, try moving it around without dropping it. Remember, it's all about subtle movements."
I concentrated harder, guiding the container left and right. It wobbled slightly, but I managed to keep it steady. My brow furrowed with effort, but I was able to maintain control. After a few moments, I carefully set it back down, releasing a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
Dazai clapped his hands, a proud smile spreading across his face. "Well done, Y/N-chan. You're improving."
I grinned, feeling a sense of accomplishment. But before I could bask in the moment, Dazai's expression turned serious again. "Now, let's talk about something important. Your ability is unique, but it's also dangerous. Especially if the Port Mafia finds out."
My heart skipped a beat at the mention of the Port Mafia. "You mean... Chuuya Nakahara?"
Dazai nodded, his gaze steady. "Precisely. His ability, 'For The Tainted Sorrow,' is remarkably similar to yours. However, he's far more experienced and ruthless. If the Port Mafia discovers your existence and your power, they'll either try to recruit you or see you as a threat to eliminate."
"I know, and that's why I joined the agency after you offered me a place," I replied, my voice steady. "But Dazai, I wanted to ask you something. Yesterday, when you gave me those paperwork to go through, I saw Chuuya Nakahara's files. But there wasn't any concrete evidence against him—just suspicions. Why is that?"
"They're the Port Mafia for a reason, Y/N-chan. They do their work neatly and leave little trace behind. It's why they're so hard to track and bring to justice. Even the city police fear them," Dazai explained, his tone grave.
I was about to ask more questions, but Dazai interrupted me. "Y/N-chan, I want you to try something different. Instead of lifting the container, focus on manipulating the gravity around it. Increase the force until it crushes."
His tone was serious again, reminding me of the gravity (pun intended) of the situation. Dazai's demeanor seemed to shift based on the situation—sometimes playful, sometimes deadly serious, especially during training.
Taking another deep breath, I extended my hand toward the container, feeling the familiar energy surge. This time, I concentrated on the space around it, intensifying the gravitational pull. The container groaned and creaked under the pressure, the metal bending and warping.
Sweat trickled down my forehead as I increased the force. The container began to compress, and with a loud crunch, it crumpled into a distorted heap. I released my grip, panting heavily. The sight of the crushed metal was both exhilarating and terrifying.
"Good," Dazai said with a smirk. "For today, let's master these concepts. Later, when you've improved in combat, we'll combine both aspects."
"Got it," I replied, feeling a mix of relief and determination.
For the next few hours, I practiced controlling heavier objects, moving them around, breaking them, and crushing them. Dazai corrected me and pointed out my mistakes, his keen eyes missing nothing. By the time we wrapped up, it was well past eleven. We began walking back to the agency apartments, the cool night air refreshing after the intense session. The city lights glittered like stars, and despite the fatigue, I felt a strange sense of hope. Ability training was tough, but it was nothing compared to the grueling combat sessions with Kunikida.
As we walked, Dazai turned to me, his expression thoughtful. "You were going to ask something earlier, Y/N-chan?"
"Huh?"
"You were about to ask something during training. Feel free to ask now," he said, his tone casual but encouraging.
"Oh, right," I replied, gathering my thoughts. "I wanted to know... how does Chuuya use his abilities in a fight?"
Dazai smiled, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "Chuuya is... unique. His fighting style is as explosive as his personality. His ability allows him to manipulate gravity at will, making him a formidable opponent. He can crush anything with a touch, nullify gravity around himself to fly, or increase it to immobilize his enemies. But seeing is believing, Y/N-chan. Describing it wouldn't do justice to his prowess. You'll understand when you see it for yourself."
"How do you know all of this.Did you fight against him anytime??If you fought who won??"I asked my curiosity intruiged .
"I know that short bastard very well; he was my partner, after all, Y/N-chan," Dazai replied, a hint of nostalgia mixed with something darker in his voice.
"Partner?" I echoed, the word catching me off guard.
Dazai glanced at me, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I used to work in the Port Mafia before joining the agency."
"Huh?!" My jaw practically dropped. The idea of Dazai, the enigmatic and often goofy member of the Armed Detective Agency, having been part of the infamous Port Mafia was shocking.
He chuckled at my reaction, a soft, almost bitter sound. "Surprised? It's true. I was an executive there, and Chuuya was my partner. We were known as the infamous 'Double Black' duo." He looked away, a shadow crossing his face. "But that was a long time ago. A different life."
The revelation left me speechless. Dazai had always been a mystery, but this was on a whole new level. It explained so much about his knowledge of the Port Mafia, his skillset, and even his demeanor. Yet, it raised even more questions. What had driven him to leave such a powerful position and join the agency?
I wanted to ask more, but something in Dazai's expression made me hold back. There was a deep, unspoken sadness in his eyes, a weight that seemed to come from a place of regret or perhaps guilt.
After a moment of silence, Dazai continued walking, his usual carefree smile returning. "Well, enough about the past. Let's focus on the present, Y/N-chan. You've got a lot of potential, and we'll do our best to bring it out."
"Yep, we definitely will," I replied, matching his cheerful tone. With that we returned to our respective apartments.
