After a movie night, some takeout, and quality time with Ayya, I finally had a peaceful sleep. But Monday had arrived, dragging me back to reality—it was time to go to college.
"How much time are you gonna take, Y/N? I'm leaving now!" Ayya shouted from the living room.
"Wait, I'm coming!" I replied, rushing to get ready. Though Ayya and I had different majors and no shared classes, we always went to college together in the mornings.
"Let's go," I said, and we both headed out.
Lectures were as dull as ever. My mind wandered, unable to focus. I always put off studying until the end unless it was a subject I loved. I wasn't at the top of the class, but I wasn't at the bottom either—comfortably in the top 10. That was good enough for me.
"Still two more hours of this? I hate it," I mumbled to myself. Bored, I decided to scroll through my phone. As I was browsing, a news article caught my eye, making my heart race. It was about the Port Mafia's recent killings. The men shown in the report were wearing the same uniforms as those I had fought the other night to rescue that child. I had no idea they were from the Port Mafia.
Panic set in. I quickly messaged Ayya, who reassured me that no one knew I had beaten Port Mafia members except the agency, and I had given them false information about myself. I tried to calm down and act normal. By the end of the class, I felt a bit better.
I called Ayya, but she didn't pick up. Assuming she had more classes, I headed back to the dorm alone. Suddenly, someone called out from behind, "Hi, Akane-san, or should I call you Y/N-san?"
I stopped dead in my tracks, recognizing the voice. "How are you, Akane-san—oh, sorry, Y/N-san," Dazai said, walking towards me. I turned to face him, my tension palpable, and words failed me as I stared blankly at him.
Mustering up my courage, I asked, "H-how did you find me?"
"Oh, that was easy, Y/N-san," Dazai replied, smirking. "We had trouble at first since Akane Kinoshita doesn't exist. But once we realized that, we matched your fingerprints and photo from our CCTV footage with records from Yokohama. Your fingerprints were a match, and now, meeting you confirms it—Akane Kinoshita is Y/N."
I grew more and more tense, which Dazai clearly noticed.
"So, why did you lie to us, Y/N?" Dazai asked, his expression now blank.
"I...I never wanted anyone to know about my ability because I can't control it. It causes more harm than good, and I rarely use it. I thought you would hand me over to the police for what I did the other night," I replied, still tense.
Dazai suddenly burst into laughter. "Oh, that's it? You made up a whole story about being from Tokyo and everything just for that?"
"I...I..."
Dazai's expression turned serious again. "Y/N, I want to talk to you about something important. Do you have any classes now?"
I couldn't understand this man at all. He laughed in serious situations and then stared blankly—what went on in his mind?
"No, I don't have any more classes. What is it?" I asked, feeling slightly relieved he had stopped talking about my lies.
"Not here," he said, pointing to a nearby café. "Let's go somewhere private."
"Okay," I agreed. I felt like I didn't have a choice. I had already lied to him once, and he wasn't letting it go.
We both entered the café, which was calm and almost empty. "Do you want anything?" Dazai asked, showing me the menu.
"Just water," I said.
"Really? Not ordering anything?" he questioned.
"No, I just ate at college," I replied.
"Okay, same for me then," he told the waiter, who nodded and left.
"So, what did you want to talk about?" I asked, still confused about his intentions.
Dazai cleared his throat. "It's about your ability. As I mentioned before, someone else has the same ability. He is from the Port Mafia."
My eyes widened at the mention of the Port Mafia.
Dazai noticed and continued, "His name is Chuuya Nakahara. Your ability is very powerful. Seeing him use it would stun you. He is incredibly strong and skilled."
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked, already guessing where this conversation was headed but needing confirmation.
"If the Port Mafia finds out about you, you'll be in serious trouble. They will capture you, and who knows what will happen next," Dazai warned.
"They haven't found out all these years, and since I'm not even thinking of using my ability, there's no chance they'll discover it," I replied, though I knew it wasn't very convincing.
Dazai took out his phone, scrolled through it, and handed it to me. I was shocked to see a video of myself using my ability that night. "We never know if the Port Mafia has secret cameras on those security guards."
I was silent. Everything he said was true.
"I have a proposal," Dazai said. I just nodded, listening. "This isn't just from me; it's from the President too. We want you to join the agency as a detective. I can train you to control and use your ability for combat. We can also provide physical training. We don't want the Port Mafia to have two dangerous abilities, and you would be a great fit for the agency."
"Huh?" I was blank for a second, then replied, "Me, joining the detective agency? I'm no good at fighting. And what about my studies, my college? How can you guys trust me? What if I betray you?"
"To answer your first question," Dazai said, smirking, "you can continue your studies through distance education and attend exams. The President will talk to the management. As for your second question," Dazai looked at me with a knowing smirk, "I can tell you won't betray us. But we'll make sure you're trustworthy before we proceed. We have our methods."
I was confused. It would be great to learn to control my ability, especially since the Port Mafia might be after me. "Do I have to sign anything like a bond or a contract?" I asked.
"A one-year contract, which you can extend if you want," Dazai replied.
"I'll tell you tomorrow, is that okay?" I asked.
"Of course, Y/N. We'll be waiting for your reply. If you decide to join, come to the agency tomorrow," Dazai said.
"Okay. Thank you for the offer anyway," I replied.
Dazai smiled. "Think carefully, Y/N," he said as we parted ways.
Working with the agency, huh? But would they seriously accept anyone like that into the agency.
