“I have good news and I have bad news…”
Varin said with a sigh.
I could already feel uncertainty clawing at my chest by the tone of his voice and how anxious he looked on the screen. “Which one do you prefer first?” he asked.
My eyes moved to Azriel who was pacing off to the side listening to us talk, ever since he got back from hunting he hadn't hardly taken a single moment to rest. I couldn't blame him, with everything that's going on it would be hard for anyone to get a moment's rest, and I doubted he was the only one stressing out.
I myself had been trying to distract myself and shove away the sense of impending doom by busying myself, but seeing how me and Kora were under heavy guard and unable to leave the cavern, there wasn't much to keep me distracted.
Taking a deep breath I looked back at the screen and mustered a half smile. “How about the good news first? we could really use it…”
“Right, well we talked with the counsel and other divisions about you and your friends' medical needs. both the health and science division agreed to aid you both when it comes time for the babies to be born. “When labor starts a team of doctors will be sent down in a small carrier ship, along with me and zena. they are permitted to use any resources necessary to ensure safe delivery for you both and the babies.”
Azriel suddenly paused his pacing hearing this and I could feel some worry lift off my shoulders. “That's a relief.”
“Yes, it was kind of surprising that the science division didn't fight us about this. They are still quite salty about everything that happened.”
Azriels tail flicked around as he narrowed his eyes. “A division is a group of people is it not? Why are you tasting them?”
Varin practically deadpanned in utter confusion as I practically facepalmed. “salty is another metaphor…”
Azriel huffed and leaned against a wall. “I will never understand your ‘metawhores’.”
“Meta-phore Azriel…” I sighed and shook my head. “moving on, now what about the bad news?” I asked none too enthusiastically.
blinking a few times, Varin cleared his throat and looked at the paper in front of him. “right– uh, well, we also got a response from the council about providing reinforcement…”
this immediately peaked Azriels attention as he stared at the screen, listening intently.
I could tell just by watching varin's shoulders slumped, that the response was far from favorable. no doubt this being the reason why it was considered ‘bad’ news.
“the council has deemed the request for reinforcement to be out of the question.” my heart sank as varin read the councils verdict off his scribe.
“Considering the world of xanadis has been officially recognized as its own province, all matters between the xandisian people are considered internal affairs. As a result of this, even as you are the envoy between the people of xanadis and the people of krosa– krosa cannot interfere with any matters between the states of the xandisian people without any prior agreements or defense pacts between said state or province.”
“I see…” my head dropped in disappointment from hearing such news.
Azriel all but snarled before stomping over and grabbing the transmitter to glare at varin. “you're telling me that after everything you humans have done– after all the bloodshed and betrayal your leaders allowed to happen as well as the meddling with our lives, only now do they choose not to interfere?! only now do they choose to turn their backs when they should be helping us fix their mistakes!” He snapped.
