A long silence was drawn before Kali said, "You really shouldn't have gone alone."

Selene nodded. "It was dumb. That's why I didn't ask you. As if you would have sent me on my merry way."

"If I knew you cared about him like that... yes."

Selene opened her mouth to deny it before thinking better of it. She couldn't lie to Kali anymore just as she could hardly lie to herself. Her actions belied her claims.

Still, she couldn't admit anything past caring for Raz.

"I've found myself at a very awkward place," Selene said finally, wanting to be honest without confronting the elephant in the room.

Kali grinned. "You think you're at an awkward place? Think about Theron. In the doghouse with his brother, his people and soon enough his mate."

"Why would he be at odds with his mate?" Selene lowered her voice, "She doesn't know he exists."

"She will." Kali reached into her pocket and drew out a gold pendant. She held it to Selene's eyes, swinging it. Selene stepped forward to take a closer look.

The pendant was the size of the nail on her thumb, yet weighed heavier than it looked. It was stamped with a set of scales. An organ on one side - a heart - and a feather on the other. It glinted in the sunlight, almost mesmerising.

Selene had to fight to look away. "I have a bad feeling about this one, what is it?"

"The golden scales. An ancient Egyptian judgment tool for the afterlife. Theron swiped it from a demon, then kept it for himself." Kali smirked. "His deposit for my services locating his mate."

Selene's brows shot up. "That's it? Your going rate is much higher." The pendant while solid gold and beautiful did not amass to Kali's exorbitant fee.

"This is the only thing he had on him. Redeemers aren't allowed to keep jewellery and he had this on him."

Selene didn't find it surprising Theron had gold on him. He broke many more rules so far. "So? He's a hypocrite."

Kali shook her head. "No, this is an enchanted necklace. It's corrupting. It's meant to make you desire it. Make it your dearest possession and it clearly worked since he kept it for no purpose. But he gave it to me without hesitation."

"Oh," Selene breathed out, now understanding. It was a one-for-one exchange. Theron desired nothing more than his mate. Whether he could admit it or not.

"You get it!"Kali said, a note of excitement in her voice. "The payoff for this will be massive."

"You're inviting me in?"

The light in Kali's eyes drew out. "Well, yes but I need to trust you on this. It makes me trust you less that you don't trust me."

Selene looked away. Should she be trusted? If it were Kali who had been trapped, would Selene have gone to save her? Her chest weighed a tonne. She didn't know the answer.

"In all honestly, Kali, maybe you shouldn't trust me... I don't know if I would have come back for you."

Kali cocked her head, staring at her. Selene felt like it was her heart being weighed on a set of scales. "Okay, that's good enough for me."

"Okay?"

"You're being honest which is bad for you but good for me. The dream team is back on," Kali said while dancing, isolating her head.

"You think Theron will be okay?"

Kali shrugged, "Let's go find out."

The both entered the living room to find Theron and Raz sitting close together on the couch. Theron was bent over, his head propped up by his arms resting on his knees. Raz had a hand slung over Theron's shoulder.

As soon as Theron noticed them, he shot upright.

Selene and Kali decided not to say anything.

"Alright Theron, Selene's on the deal," Kali said.

"No. Way." Theron replied emphatically.

"I need someone to back me up," Kali insisted.

"Use Raz."

"Oh so now you trust me," Raz interjected.

"Compared to her, yes!" Theron emphasised with his hands.

Raz stood up and walked up to Kali and Selene. "I would prefer if Selene was in on this."

Theron glared back.

"You owe me..."

"Why do you even want her on this? Shouldn't you be trying to keep her far away somewhere safe?"

Raz turned to smile at Selene, "She doesn't know what safe means so I'd rather we stay together." Raz turned serious again. "You want to find this girl or not?"

"... Yes."

"Then we're done here."
