"We need to get you some new clothes," Raz said, as he left the motel lobby with Selene.
"I'm not doing anything without getting me some coffee." Selene looked petulant in his oversized t-shirt with her hair tied up in two long dutch braids, stomping around in heels. For the fifth time this morning, he let himself wonder, was she wearing anything underneath the shirt?
Her bare face and the baby hairs framing her face made her look younger in the daylight and more innocent. Less like the sociopathic woman she was.
"Do you really need coffee?" She was so like the humans she detested, requiring stimulants to be awake. Although Raz had barely slept two hours, he felt no worse for wear. He could go on for another week like this. Was Selene still sleepy?
She glared at him in response, sliding into the passenger seat of his car.
So, she was grumpy in the mornings. For some reason that made him smile.
They drove on till silence until they reached a small suburban street, with stores lined up on the streets. Raz parked his car right in front of a department store.
"Look," Raz pointed at a cafe right next to the store as he got out of the car, "coffee."
Selene immediately stalked in the direction of the cafe.
"Not yet." Raz grabbed onto the back of Selene's t-shirt. "After we shop."
She grumbled something indecipherable as they walked into the department store. Cool air-conditioned air fanned their faces as they entered, greeted by endless aisles and a woman with a too-big grin on her face.
"Not exactly designer apparel. I trust you'll survive?"
Selene scoffed, "Barely." Raz grabbed her hand as she reached for a black mini-skirt.
"What?"
Raz shook his head. "You can't wear that. You should wear baggy clothes. Pretend you're a boy so we can sneak around easier."
Selene raised her brows, gesturing down her body. "Does this body look 'boy' to you?"
It most certainly didn't.
"If you put your hair up and wear a hoodie..."
"Nope. Wouldn't work. I've tried. It ain't just my looks, it's my energy. It's too feminine." At Raz's incredulous expression, she put her hands up in surrender. "Not my fault. It's a Siren thing." She let go of the mini-skirt, picking up a pair of boyfriend jeans. "But you're right. No point drawing extra attention to the goods right now."
For his safety, he had to agree.
She grinned, looking off in the distance. "For you, let's pick something different."
"What?"
"Well, you're always wearing all these mysterious black clothes and I don't think it's your vibe."
"My vibe?"
"That's what I said." A grin still plastered to her face.
Selene walked over to another aisle, drawing out a black and red striped polo shirt. "Cute, huh?" She said, smiling.
"I don't wear colours." Raz grabbed the shirt, putting it back.
"Why?" Selene said, with a pout. "A dumb Redeemer rule?"
"A dumb 'me' rule."
"That's the genius of it! No one will recognise a well dressed you and a boringly dressed me!" Selene grabbed the shirt back, taking a plain black t-shirt for herself. "I'll even cut my hair."
