It truly wasn't a hard thing to break out of bonds. Especially rope ones.
Handcuffs were a new thing but rope... Selene had spent decades being in disputes with sea-faring men who like to tie her up.
Although she liked to pretend she had some sort of skill with it, she just had sharp talons for nails that she filed down to blend in with humans. That and the looseness of the Reformer's knot made it easy. Selene didn't even have to dislocate her wrists. People never understood that part of sirens because they were weak physically. If the thing didn't kill them, the pain was trivial.
She felt almost offended that the Reformer underestimated her like this. He hadn't even bought enchanted rope.
She wouldn't make the same mistake.
The Reformer was bound the hunt her if she ran away. She needed to seriously slow him down.
She had realised something. Something essential as they were walking. She had known that she was probably on the wrong side of the law with them, most immortals were. They had an ineffective and hypocritical system of law at best and unless you really messed up, you were fine.
There was absolutely no reason to have her imprisoned.
Except for the fact that she had pissed off their leader last month.
She should have thought of that first for the starchy Redeemer but she pissed off a lot of people, it was hard to keep track.
But the one she pissed off last week was a Redeemer and she hadn't pissed off one of those.
She remembered him at a casino she had been. A tall blonde man with a face that belonged in a painting of some angelic figure. He had no business in a casino. He said Official business, when she asked. Hypocritical bastard. Worse still he had been losing and Selene had been winning. A bored egotistical Selene did not make for a safe evening.
She had really pissed him off. He had just sat there like a psychopath with a locked jaw and popping veins.
This was why she liked werewolves. A werewolf would have socked her in the face. Redeemers liked to play with their prey and not in a fun way like vampires. In a boring way like arresting them.
But Selene was fairly certain the leader would have her killed. She found out his little secret and he would not be happy with her alive and bursting with the opportunity to relieve herself of the secret.
She wasn't just fighting for something sappy like her freedom, and now she was in it for her life. Redeemers loved targets like her. Other immortals had these community ties where if you killed one, you'd get messed with all of them. Sirens could not care less. They were solitary creatures and only killed or fought for sport.
She was pretty sure her death for the people in her coven would only serve as small talk the next time they saw each other.
Oh, hey Naomi. Did you know Selene got killed? Yeah a Redeemer did her in. I know, so stupid of her to get herself murdered.
Not in this lifetime.
Selene looked across the field to the barn and the house with the light on inside.
If the human woke up inside, she would be okay. The Redeemer could hardly kill the human and detaining him would slow him down.
By that time, Selene would grab the car, if he had fixed it, and bolt.
The Redeemer was fast, faster than a car, but he couldn't run for long at that speed.
At least she hoped he couldn't.
