God, I can't wait to sink my head into a soft pillow.
Selene's entire body was aching at the poor care it had been shown. Although she often went on days long periods without sleep, the adrenalin had made everything more run down.
Her feet dragged against the pavement as she made her way to the hotel lobby, stinging slightly from being assaulted with little rocks. It was just like Kali to not notice her bare feet. Selene sighed as she gazed up at the black expanse that was tonight's sky. Devoid of stars here. It had lightened a little by the time she had reached here.
Dawn was coming soon.
With only the thought of bed in her mind, Selene didn't even react to the low whizzing sound of air being disturbed, next to her ear.
In fact she didn't even notice the pain strike her right ear.
It was ten whole steps later when Selene realised there was something wet, dripping on her neck.
Her shaking hand came to touch her neck, pulling it away, only to see her fingertips coated in blood.
Selene whipped her head back to see an empty parking lot.
Somebody was out there. She leaped toward the back of the closest car where she was hoping she would be covered.
Her brain was pulsating with anxiety and a dangerous lack of sleep. Think, Selene, think!
There was a small part of her, a very dangerous one, that coaxed her to relax. To not think about the life threatening danger. To accept whatever fate would meet her today and not fight against it. Selene didn't hold her life in high regard, she was living day to day for nothing other than the sake of surviving. She had lived longer than she had thought she would and this all would have to end someday...
The day she fell into the icy sea, her dress billowing above her head so she could see nothing. She had fought very hard. For a while. Then she had accepted what was to come and sank, very still, ever deeper.
She did not know her eyes would open again. Let alone open to the ocean floor in complete darkness where she could somehow make every detail. She could see the rocky bottom, fish swimming along miles above her head and a figure in the distance. This shocked her more than the fact she could suddenly breath in water.
Sirens were made, not born.
Everyone thought it was a blessing to mortal females, from some ocean goddess they had all forgotten. She only picked women who drowned with vengeful spirits and hate in their heart. When Selene had died, there was only sadness. One she could have drowned in. But nothing so aggressive as anger or resentment. She had been past that.
Some of her kind were too choked up in the venom of their human life to see the truth. But Selene saw the truth.
The truth was laughing at them.
It was that knowledge that made Selene shake off that feeling of comfort. Despite everything, despite the lack of attachment she had to this second chance, she couldn't let it go. Last week even she might have given up.
Today though... Today she would try.
If she was shot, it would have to be at a long distance where her voice couldn't carry. She gazed up at the roof of the buildings next to the hotel. No one on this side.
But if they were redeemers, they could remedy that in no time.
She peeked her head up slightly to see if the other side had anything.
A vision of sparks blasted in front of her.
Selene's breaths came out in little pants. The car had actually shook. Someone had shot at it, although she didn't hear any noise. Enchanted bullets. There was a sniper on the other side who Selene would bet her entire closet was a redeemer.
