"Who?"
"Isaac, my brother's right hand," Raz spat out.
"Hold on," Kali raised his fingers to her temple, massaging the skin. "My head's still not wrapped around the fact that the leader of the Redeemers is your freaking brother."
Selene raised a brow, "Freaking?"
"Fucking would be too commonplace a curse right now." Kali sighed, pouring out two fingers of amber liquid into a crystal glass, the liquid sloshing too loud. "This is the second time you've made me come here."
"This is important." Raz took the liberty of pouring himself a glass too.
"She said that the first time," Kali muttered.
"No one's going to ask if they can have my vintage?"
"Selene there are far more pressing issues than your damn thirty year old scotch." Kali glared at her. She took a deep breath before continuing, "Let me get this straight. You're a half Redeemer. You share a father with Theron, who's the top dog. He's the one who introduced you to the world of immortals. He wants to kill Selene. You don't want that to happen for some reason. His henchman was stalking Selene. Is that all?"
"Is that all?" Raz repeated, bewildered. "Isaac trying to search for Selene is bad!"
"So what, he's doing your brother's dirty work," Selene said. Kali nodded, her eyes looking dimmer than they had before.
Raz shook his head. "Isaac stalking Selene means he's trying to find her for his own reasons."
"Forgive me for sounding ignorant but I do not see the reason to start panicking," Kali said.
"Theron wouldn't send him. He wouldn't take the chance of leaving Selene with another Redeemer in case his secret were revealed."
"He left you with her," Kali pointed out.
Raz's jaw clenched. Theron did leave him and Selene by themselves. Wasn't he ever afraid Selene might say something? Was he convinced that Raz would never use the information against him? "That's different."
"How so?" Kali's dark eyes narrowed. She wasn't wearing contacts today, Raz suddenly realised. They were their natural dark brown shade.
"I'm his brother. He trusts me." Theron trusted Isaac too. Raz shook his head. Theron didn't trust anyone, there had to be some other reasoning.
Kali's frown tightened. "So, if this Isaac is trying to find Selene for his own purposes..."
"Then he wants to know Theron's secret," Raz finished grimly. "He's planning a coup."
"That's a good thing for me." Selene crossed her arms. "If Theron is out of the picture I'm free."
"But then he'll be inaccessible to me!" Kali said.
"Not my problem."
A tense silence unfurled through the room like smoke, curling up at the ceiling, smothering the air in the room. Was it Raz's imagination or were Kali's eyes shining more than usual? It must be the light.
Finally Raz said, "Isaac needs your cooperation to overthrow Raz. He's not going to ask you kindly."
"I'll just tell him."
"What makes you think he won't hurt you when you're not useful anymore?" He didn't know what Isaac would do but he wasn't taking the chance.
Selene clenched her fists, her reddening face highlighting the swollen vein in her forehead, "That's not fair!"
