She knew she could never make Denise help her, even with her song. Her loyalty to Kali was far too strong. The only option she had would be to break that steel rod. She would erode at it until Denise gave up. Just a little. Then she'd use her song.
Only she had until Kali woke to do it. She thanked the stars that Denise was not very intelligent.
"Hey, Denise," Selene tried to say glumly. "Kali's a little on edge lately, it seems."
Instead of nodding as she had expected, Denise glared at her!
"You've felt she was acting strange lately?" She tried again.
"No."
She might have gone about this wrong. Instead of eroding a steel rod, she was trying to erode a steel bunker.
Quickly she added, "Well, I think she is. The stress is getting to her."
"Stress?"
New plan. The path of least resistance would be convincing Denise that she was saving Kali.
"From this entire plan. She's getting hit from all sides right now. Isaac will be coming to find her, for revenge so she has not much time to break Theron." She whispered, "He's unbreakable."
Denise swallowed.
"Poor thing's taking naps in the daytime. She'll waste away before Issac gets a chance at her." This was true enough. The lie was just that Kali would never lose sleep over a mutt like Isaac.
"No, she's tough," Denise protested weakly.
Selene shrugged. "Sure. Now she is."
"I wish I could help her."
She smiled. "Oh but we can. The man Kali wants - St Pierre - his tracking data is back at the castle. If we fetch that for her, she won't need Theron and we can get out of here now."
"Go to the castle! Kali said -"
"Yeah I know. This is a chance for you to prove yourself to her. She'll be so pleased with you fixing this for her."
"Really?"
Selene couldn't stop the grin. She had convinced Denise enough, the witch was now confused. She could work with that.
Cautiously, she said, "Teleport me to Castle Elysium, by the dungeon's entrance."
Denise looked up, confused for a millisecond before her eyes turned glassy. There would be hell to pay for this. She would have to watch her back for this one.
She stepped towards her arms outstretched. This was going to be painful.
~
Selene proved herself right. This was painful.
"Stay here," she said again before slinking into the shadows by the gates of the dungeon. Theron had said her best bet was cornering a guard and stealing his keys. Every guard had a key for all the prisons. She doubted Raz would be kept in an average prison.
She peeked around the corner to get a closer look at the small circle of guards seated around the table, with cards and glasses of amber liquid dangling between their fingers. Yet another thing Redeemers weren't meant to do...
The lateness of the night was apparent in their heavy eyelids. When she saw faint bloodstains on a guard's forehead, she realised they were the same guards that were in the room with her and Raz.
No one else must know then, of Isaac's little coup.
It was a bad idea to have the same people guarding. They were injured. They were somewhat worn. She could do this.
Selene ran back around the corner and settled against the wall, shivering at the feel of the icy stone. All the guards had the same enchanted earpiece that would block her song. She couldn't take them all like this, without Maria's invasive magic. She would have to wait for the weakest one to emerge and single him out.
She resisted the urge to sigh. Denise might get sick of waiting by then...
One step at a time!
She watched them in her small cold corner, her nerves grazed with irritation. She could just go out and find Raz herself... If she were spotted, it wouldn't help either of them. She had to wait this out. She waited until her back was numb against the wall. She waited until her own eyes began to betray her with their heaviness. She was just about to risk it all when a guard stood up. The weakest one; the one with the most bloodstains. His guilt was strong.
He joked around with the guard next to him before walking off into her direction. She couldn't hear what he was saying. At times like this, she truly cursed herself for being the weakest immortal.
He walked right past her, into a shadowy tunnel where she followed. She would only have one chance to knock off his earpiece. He had too many advantages on her and she only had the element of surprise. She slid along the wall, clutching her favourite dagger, silent as a spirit. She would slice his ear off and take out the other earpiece, that was surely the quickest way.
The man paused suddenly and Selene's heart froze.
"I know you're here," he said without turning around.
Before she could even think about it her hand went swinging into a wide arc designated to slice off the guard's throat. It was only apparent to her that half way through, the guard had ducked and slammed the blade out of her hands. She realised she was now at the guard's feet, flat on her stomach with a knee at her lower back holding her down.
She had messed this up thoroughly.
She made one last ditch attempt to shake him off but the weight of his knee intensified. "Stop! I'm trying to help you here."
She stopped. "What?"
"I'm trying to help you. You came here to get Raziel didn't you?"
Selene wouldn't reveal anything. "Why do you want to help me? You're with Isaac."
"Yes..." The weight at her back lessened. "I was - I mean I am but I don't - I don't agree with this. Hurting Theron was necessary but Raziel did not need to be hurt," The guard said quietly.
That sounded laughable to Selene. However, he had her down. And there was no way she could see that she might get his earpiece off.
"Fine. Then tell me where he is then?"
"In a hidden cell. I'll take you there."
This was getting worse and worse for her. She was caught and bent at this point. She had no choice but to follow him. Probably to Isaac.
