Raz was tight as a coil as they neared the barn.
He could see no lights from inside the house, that lay far from the barn. But the distance was close enough that the people inside the house could hear loud noises from the barn. Whoever lived in the house was fast asleep. He intended to keep it that way.
It was a sturdy barn. Picturesque. Like something from one of the picture books his mother read him. Red with white wooden beams. A wire fence around the perimeter. The house though was a little more than a cabin though Raz couldn't really tell.
"Is that the house you're borrowing a car from?"
He needed to make sure she was quiet. If whoever lived inside woke up... Things could get messy.
He couldn't afford for them to get messy. Redeemers weren't allowed to interact with humans, affect their life in any way. Considering he had with him a siren, he'd be affecting their life plenty if they were enchanted by her. He'd either have to avoid humans or kill them.
The woman with him had no qualms about killing.
One thing he knew to do was plan ahead. In his bag, he had a potion he bought off a witch that enchanted a person into being unable to speak. Something about the cunning gleam in the siren's eye told him she might be able to persuade people without talking. He also bought rope. Plain rope from a hardware store. She was extremely weak physically, she'd never escape from the rope. He couldn't justify buying enchanted rope when she would find it impossible to escape from plain old rope.
Good thing he had those things on his person because he also bought two weeks worth of food for the siren. It was in his car though.
Another problem.
Raz decided to tie her up to the tree just ahead of them. It was far enough away from the main road so that anyone passing wouldn't see her but close enough that if she escaped he'd be able to track her down.
Even if she did somehow escape his bindings, she'd run away from this place surely. She could have an hour on him and he would still be able to track her down.
Somewhat comforted, he pulled free his rope and cracked it right in front of her.
Her eyes widened, "Oh my! Kinky are we?"
Raz suddenly had a feeling of dread that barrelled into his stomach so strong, he suspected he would be the one to land in a jail of some kind after this.
He wrapped a loop of the rope around the short stumpy tree while using his free hand to hold onto her. Raz tied her to the tree, her wrists pressed right against it.
He took a step back and was about to leave when he noticed the redness around her wrists. The tree had so much dry bark, it was bound to be uncomfortable. Just because she was his prisoner, didn't mean he had to be cruel to her.
Then he heard a voice that was almost his own. Suffering is their penance.
Raz averted his eyes and stalked off into the direction of the barn. A little bit of pain won't kill her. His own voice reminded him, but Theron just might.
He couldn't fault Theron for that. She really did deserve it. She was a murderer. But hardly by immortal standards...
He couldn't think about her morality right now. He needed to keep his cool in there.
Raz ran ahead to leap over the wire fence that was up to his hips, He landed with a soft thud and jogged to the barn. It brought him back to the time when he was a star in high school at high jump. And long jump. And long distance running. He'd been so sure then how things would turn out for him.
