Selene wasn't in the mood for this.
She saw Raziel getting up, walking calmly up to the waitress, giving her a backward glance then turning away. Part of her wanted to stay here forever. Her head was pounding and her belly was nowhere near full. The morning was turning hot already and Selene found it was far too easy to close her eyes and bask in the sunlight. To give in.
That was what made her bolt to the door.
She had to get out.
Before she knew what she was doing, her feet were already skidding on the gravel outside. To her right, cars zoomed down the highway against the backdrop of flat beige earth.
Hitchhike it was.
Selene had taken two steps when she was hurled back.
Her back slammed against the brick wall of the dinner and all the air left Selene's lungs. She could see black dots swim in her vision as she shook her head, trying to regain her vision. All of her bones seemed to ache deep within like they had been hollowed out.
"What?" She mumbled out when a large hand clapped over her mouth, loud enough for the sound to reverberate through her skull. Her face was stinging.
Selene's heart froze in place.
The face staring back at her wasn't Raziel. Their face was covered with a mask but black curls spilled over the mask.
The man's other hand came up, a knife glinting in between his fingers.
She couldn't help it. She went wild. Arms and legs kicking and flying everywhere. She must have made contact somewhere, she couldn't feel it with the adrenaline rushing through her blood, because he removed his hand from her face.
"Get away from me!" Selene gasped out, out of breath.
The man chuckled. He spun his blade in his hand.
Why wasn't it working? She had said that with her power. Why wasn't he moving away?
His hand flew out and gripped her throat.
Oh God, she was going to die here.
His hands tightened around her neck, squeezing slowly. She felt the blade at her stomach, pressing in.
Suddenly the pressure lifted.
Raz stood over the man, a gun in his hand.
Selene couldn't help herself. She flew right into him, her hands gripping his shirt at the back, her face nested right under his collarbone.
As quick as it had happened, Selene lifted herself off of him. Rather, he pushed her awayShe didn't miss the wide eyes as he stepped back.
Oh great, now he would get ideas.
The man groaned as he lifted himself up.
Raz fought dirty because his heavy boot went crashing into the man's face as soon as he had moved. He did not give his opponent a chance to fight back. There was hope for him, still.
Raz leapt on top of the man, his fists pounding into the guy's skull. He pulled out something pink from the man's ears. What was that? Earplugs?
"Who are you?"
The man of course, didn't answer.
Raz went to pry the mask off the man's face and the man stopped struggling. Selene saw his hands reaching toward a holster in his belt.
"Shoot yourself!"
A loud pop.
A shrill scream.
