After the week of Juneteenth festivities, a sense of calm settled over Martha's Vineyard. The break from formal events allowed Zoya to relax, aside from a few more family dinners that Camille invited her to. Surprisingly, these dinners had become less stressful, as Camille was on her best behavior. Realizing her time on the island would end soon, she felt a renewed urgency to complete everything she had planned. Reviewing her list, she was pleased to see that most of her goals were already accomplished.
As for Monet, part of her missed her best friend, Luna. They messaged each other frequently, staying updated with Luna's new life as an upcoming supermodel. Monet saw Luna's glamorous photoshoots, exciting events, and lavish parties through social media. However, though she would never admit it, Monet genuinely enjoyed her time with Zoya. They had a fun time exploring the island together. They dined at charming local restaurants, attended bonfire parties on the beach, and sailed on the calm waters.
"Monet, you have to find a way to come to Europe. Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris is coming up, and I want you here with me," Luna pleaded during their FaceTime call.
"I know, but my mother is dead set on teaching me a lesson by not letting me join you," Monet replied, rolling her eyes in annoyance at her mother's stubbornness.
"But you said she's been in a good mood with you lately, right? Maybe she'll reconsider. What have you been doing to stay on her good side?" Luna asked, curious about the sudden change in Camille's attitude.
"Oh, you know, just keeping my head down," Monet said evasively, not wanting to reveal that she had been on her best behavior since she started 'dating' Zoya. It wasn't intentional at first; it just happened as they spent more time getting to know each other. Monet had never told Luna about dating Zoya and made sure to hide any stories or posts about their time together on social media from Luna.
As they continued their conversation, both Monet and Luna were interrupted by a sudden knock at Monet's door.
"Do not disturb," Monet grumbled irritably. "I swear, the staff never listens," she complained to Luna.
"It's me?" Zoya's voice came through the door.
"Wait, was that-" Luna began to say, but Monet cut her off. "Oh shit, that's Nicole. I forgot we had a lunch thing. I'll text you later; bye," Monet rushed, ending their FaceTime call abruptly. She then got up and opened the door to Zoya.
"What are you doing here?" Monet asked, sounding confused as Zoya slipped past her and settled onto her bed.
"I thought we could go on a bike ride," Zoya said, her voice full of excitement.
"No," Monet replied quickly.
"Why not? Oh my God, Monet, do you not know how to ride a bike?" Zoya whispered incredulously.
"OF COURSE I KNOW HOW TO RIDE A BIKE!" Monet retorted, clearly offended.
"Oh, my bad. I didn't know rich people rode bikes," Zoya teased, her laughter soft and playful. Monet rolled her eyes and playfully smacked Zoya with a pillow, prompting more laughter from her.
