Despite the lightness of the dawning sky, the stars were so bright and clear like distant diamonds sparkling in the morning sky. As the sun started to rise, it had caught the colors of a blazing, aflame ember as it rise in the east. The faint outline of the moon was in a pale circle of silver, glowing faintly in the dawning sky.
"Looks bigger than your other builds. What are you doing with all the extra scrap?" Lloyd asked as he approached the two girls, causing Nya to lift up her welding mask and look over at him.
"Since we're outnumbered, we're upping the mech's armor and firepower," Nya explained before smiling and turning her attention over to the Master of Amber a few paces away. "And thanks to some feedback from Skylor, I feel like it's really taking shape."
"But it's so... bulky— How is it supposed to outmaneuver the Sons of Garmadon's stone colossus if it gets too close?" Lloyd asked, his concern evident in his tone.
"It's a work in progress; but don't worry, she'll be ready," Skylor reassured the Ninja Master as she shot him a confident smile, before handing Nya another armful of metal sheets.
Lloyd did his best to show the orange clad girl a smile of his own. He knew Nya, Skylor, and Pixal were all extremely clever and capable in their own rights, however, he couldn't help but worry. He was still without his Elemental Powers, and without them, he felt weak. He lacked confidence in himself, and it seemed to be that those same feelings of uncertainty were now spreading and infecting his faith in the Resistance's abilities as a whole. As Lloyd turned to walk away though, he took in a deep breath.
He couldn't let this uncertainty overwhelm him. He trusted his friends, and as such, he had to believe for himself that they would be able to overcome any obstacle his father and Harumi might possibly throw their way.
"Karlof!" The familiar voice of Mystake called from the other side of the room. Immediately, the elderly woman had caught everyone's attention, and they watched as she began to make her way down the metal staircase that led to the office on the second floor.
"Do you think I can get your help with Lloyd's training?" Mystake asked as she reached the bottom of the steps.
"Ooo, it would be my pleasure!" Karlof replied excitedly as he looked over at the green ninja to his right, flashing the young teen a smirk as he slammed his metal gauntlets together.
"Go easy on me. I'm powerless," Lloyd reminded the Master of Metal as he held his arms up in mock surrender.
"Actually, it won't be you who will be facing Karlof," Mystake cut back in as she walked over
to the two of them. "Instead, it will be Dareth."
"Me!?" Dareth exclaimed, just as confused as the rest of them. The self proclaimed Brown Ninja quickly cleared his throat though as he did his best to muster up some fake confidence. "I— I mean uh, alright. Hey! Heh heh, it's about time!"
"But, Dareth isn't an Elemental Master— OW!" Lloyd began. The Green Ninja's outstretched arm was swiftly smacked by Mystake's wooden cane, causing the young Ninja to recoil his hand back as his wrist began to throb with pain.
"Neither are you!" Mystake stated bluntly as she pushed her way past the green clad boy. As Mystake reached the far side of the garage, an empty space now having been cleared by the other Elemental Masters, she continued to speak. "Power takes many forms beyond what is physical. The power of persuasion, the power of numbers, and the power to lead."
"True power is never lost," Diana added with a smile, walking next to Lloyd. "Besides, some people have managed to learn how to do Spinjitzu without an Element."
Mystake then paused as she gently guided Dareth towards the imaginary fighting ring where Karlof was already waiting. Despite his opponent having been someone else than who he had thought it to be originally, Karlof still looked just as excited as before. The Master of Metal even clapped his metal gauntlets together again as Dareth entered the cleared out space with him.
"Don't forget, Power of Metal!" Karlof exclaimed.
This time as Karlof slammed the knuckles of his steel gauntlets together, he also absorbed some of the material they were made of. Encasing his entire body in a thick layer of metal, and causing him to grow by at least another foot in height. Dareth made an audible gulping sound as he nervously faced off against the empowered elemental master. The confidence he had tried to show previously, now faded away.
"Oh boy... You're gonna be a tough nut to crack," said Dareth nervously.
Still on the sidelines with everyone else, Lloyd couldn't help, but feel this whole situation was extremely unfair. Karlof was the Elemental Master of Metal, who even at full strength, he and any of the other Ninja would still have an extremely hard time taking down. Dareth, on the other hand, was a middle aged man who was, admittedly, not in the best physical condition. Sure Dareth had never been muscular or flexible, but the brown clothed man's midsection had seemed to... round out— in recent years. A result of too many Puffy Potstickers, and not enough physical activity to work them off.
As Lloyd shot the elderly woman beside him a look of concern she frowned. "Don't look at me."
"Lead him, son," Misako chimed in, causing Lloyd to glance over at his mother for a brief second.
Now he was starting to understand why Mystake had chosen Dareth instead of him to face off against Karlof. This was some sort of lesson. The cryptic shop owner had just mentioned something about... The power of persuasion was it? He was meant to lead Dareth, and guide him from the sidelines. However, Lloyd failed to see what good that would do. Even if he could instruct Dareth, there wasn't much he could say to help his friend. Again, he stood no chance against the Master of Metal. Lloyd did his best to hold in the heavy sigh he felt like letting out though. This was a lesson meant to teach him something, and although he was certainly lacking the confidence of Dareth winning this fight, starting off the match displaying low morale would only ensure the man's loss.
"You can do this Dareth." Lloyd did his best to reassure the brown clad man as he gave him a nod of reassurance. Dareth still seemed nervous, but showed the green ninja a hesitant nod in return before turning his attention back to Karlof.
"With the power of brown, you're about to go down," Dareth remarked as he narrowed his gaze at the Master of Metal. Dareth then began to take up a series of different, and rather untraditional, fighting stances as he continued to speak. "Brown Bear! Spiky penguin—!" The brown clad man named off as he wailed and growled in animalistic ways.
The odd tactics and sounds coming from the powerless man seemed to confuse Karlof for a moment, but it didn't take long for him to grow tired of Dareth's tomfoolery. Karlof reeled back one of his arms, and with a powerful punch to the chest, sent Dareth flying backwards a dozen feet before he landed on his back on the cool concrete of the floor. The onlooking members of the Resistance all hissed and winced through gritted teeth at the blow Karlof had dealt to the smaller man. That had to have hurt, and was certainly going to leave a bruise even though Karlof was going easy on him! As Dareth hastily and painstakingly picked himself back up, there was a new rush of fear running through his veins. The Master of Metal was a powerhouse compared to him, and he hadn't even signed up for this in the first place!
Diana raised an eyebrow at the older man and exchanged a weirded out look with Sensei Garmadon. He shrugged to her and patted her shoulder. Diana hummed thoughtfully as she started to remember the lessons that has been taught by Sensei Garmadon. Sometimes, to win a battle is by not fighting and resist the violence. She was so deep in her thoughts that she didn't realize that the practice fight was over and Mystake was speaking to Lloyd softly.
"I said I can't fight everyone's—!" Lloyd paused in the middle of his sentence though. Mystake was smiling at him slyly.
She had heard him the first time, and had wanted him to repeat himself so that he could realize the reason behind their lesson. He couldn't fight everyone's fights, he couldn't save everyone. This was what she had been trying to get him to see. As a leader, his main role was not to defend everyone who needed saving, but rather to provide them with the tools they needed in order to become their best selves. Immediately the anger boiling up inside of him dissipated as Lloyd relaxed.
"How do I lead the Resistance?" Lloyd asked the mystic in front of him.
In all honesty, Lloyd had shrugged off what it was Mystake had been talking about before Karlof and Dareth's fight; and only now did he realize that those pieces of knowledge were also parts of the puzzle he needed in order to complete his understanding. With all of the pieces together, he would finally be able to make out the bigger picture that she had been trying to show him this whole time. Instructions on how to become the leader the Resistance needed him to be, that he had been too stubborn to pay attention to before.
"By finding your voice." Mystake smirked as she shoved the Green Ninja backwards with the end of her cane. It had taken him long enough to put everything together! Lloyd rubbed the sore spot on his bicep that Mystake had pushed against with her cane, but even at the painful poke Lloyd remained calm, his attention solely focused on what the tea shop owner was saying.
"The more you inspire others, the more others will inspire you. And you better find your voice soon, because today you will be taking back the airwaves," Mystake continued as she moved over to the small television still playing 'Ultra Hunt', before tapping the top of it.
"The airwaves?" Lloyd asked confusedly. What did taking back the airwaves have to do with him strengthening their small Resistance?
"The people of Ninjago think you are gone. Show them you are not!" Mystake exclaimed as she stomped her cane on the ground, causing the noise to echo throughout the warehouse.
Then, without another word, Mystake turned off the television before making her way back towards the metal staircase she had come down from.
Everyone else was left speechless for a moment. They all barely understood what had just happened. After a few seconds of silence had passed though, Lloyd still did not completely understand Mystake, but she had yet to lead him and the others astray. If the next step in whatever her convoluted plan was, was to take back the airwaves, then that's what they were going to do.
"You heard her," Lloyd began, his voice breaking the silence and caught everyone's attention. "Let's get a plan together." A serious expression painted across his face as he walked over to the table the small television box was still on, and moved it out of the way as he began spreading out blank pages for a battle plan.
