It took me three days to answer my father's call. At first I'd panicked that something could go terribly wrong after his first attempt to reach me so I called the doctor in charge of my father and asked him if everything was ok. Once the doctor told me that Dad was doing incredibly well and recovering quicker than he'd anticipated I decided to punish my father by ignoring him. I lasted three days.
Harry, however, rang my phone constantly and left so many voice mails that my inbox was full. He was such a persistent, stubborn man, much like my father and possibly even more so.
"What do you need?" I finally answered Harry on the evening of day two of being back home.
"What I want Lincoln..." he said with an exasperated tone..."is for you to answer my fucking phone call."
"Seems like I just did Harry. Now what can I help you with?" I rolled my eyes. He was persistent, even when he should be apologizing profusely.
My father had asked for him to stay to aid in his rehab and it was like a slap in the face.
"Link, I was as surprised as you were that he asked me to stay." Harry said.
"Why Harry? Why did he want you of all people?" I spit out, sounding harsher than I should have.
"Because he didn't want you to sit around and coddle him like a child Lincoln. He doesn't want or need that." I could tell that he was growing angry that the call wasn't going well so far.
"Excuse me? Since when are you an expert in what MY father needs? Last I checked YOUR father was still alive. Maybe go make nice with him and leave mine alone."
I knew instantly that I'd hurt him. The truth was I didn't know much about his relationship with his family. Harry was closed off when it came to things like that. He'd rather insert himself into my business than to share his own. He took a deep breath and then he went silent. I pulled my phone away from my ear to make sure the call was still connected. It was.
"Feel better now?" He said softly.
The truth was, I didn't. I felt like crap for hurting him.
"I'm sorry. That was a low blow." I said.
"Yeah, an unexpected one coming from you of all people."
I'd never heard him have this tone of voice.
"Harry. Look, I'm frustrated and confused as to why he sent me away. I'm sorry for taking my anger out on you. I don't know a lot about you. You're fiercely private in that way and if I've stepped over-"
"It's fine. Forget it Lincoln." He interrupted.
This was what Harry does best. He shuts things down when it gets too personal on his end. I could relate to that and I'd been trying to deny being like him in this way.
