"I'd better go. Jake's probably waiting on me." Jay waved goodbye, and as he left, Eugene settled into her seat more comfortably. She and Jiwon continued to chat, with Eugene asking about classes, the teachers, and what Jiwon liked to do in her free time. The conversation was light and easy, helping Jiwon relax. When the time came to head back to class, the two of them gathered their things and walked together. As they entered the room, Jiwon felt a little more at ease, her earlier nerves beginning to fade, though she couldn't quite forget the way her eyes had followed Jake as he left.
Later in the afternoon, it was time for P.E. Everyone from the class gathered on the school's outdoor field, the sun casting long shadows as they assembled. The air was filled with a mix of chatter and laughter as some students began warming up, stretching their legs and jogging in place. Others were already engaging in playful banter, tossing a ball back and forth or trying to one-up each other in a sprint.
Jiwon found herself on the sidelines, sitting on the grass with her arms wrapped around her knees, watching the scene unfold. She hadn't quite found the energy to join in yet, preferring to observe instead. The rhythmic thud of sneakers hitting the ground and the occasional shout or laugh filled the air, creating a lively atmosphere.
As she watched her classmates warm up, Jiwon couldn't help but notice the different dynamics at play. Some students were clearly comfortable and confident, moving with practiced ease, while others, like her, hung back a little, taking it all in.
From her spot, she could see Jake among the group, effortlessly blending in with the others. He was focused, his movements deliberate and sure as he stretched out his arms and legs, preparing for whatever activity the coach had planned. Even in this casual setting, there was something about the way he carried himself that drew her attention.
Jiwon felt a small flutter of nervousness in her chest. She wasn't sure if she was ready to join in, but watching everyone else slowly motivated her to consider it. For now, though, she stayed where she was, content to be a quiet observer, at least for a little while longer.
The P.E. class had split into groups, and Jake was already on the basketball court, moving with the kind of effortless skill that drew attention. The ball seemed almost like an extension of his hands, each dribble and pass smooth and controlled. A few girls on the sidelines couldn't help themselves, letting out excited squeals as they watched him play.
Jiwon sat nearby, her eyes inevitably drawn to the court. She observed the scene quietly, her thoughts swirling. The way those girls squealed and cheered, so unabashedly expressive, was something Jiwon knew she could never muster the courage to do. She couldn't imagine herself being so free, so open about her admiration.
Her gaze lingered on Jake, particularly on his hands as he handled the ball. They were strong, veiny, each movement revealing the taut lines of muscle and sinew. There was something oddly captivating about them, and before she realized it, her attention was completely locked on them.
Suddenly, Jiwon felt a rush of heat rise to her cheeks, her face turning a deep crimson. She quickly shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts and pull herself out of the trance she'd slipped into. This wasn't like her, to be so focused on someone like that. She tore her gaze away, trying to steady her racing heart, but the blush on her face remained, betraying the effect Jake had on her.
