the night before taylor's birthday is supposed to be a quiet, intimate evening—just the two of you curled up on her couch, watching movies and savoring the comfort of each other's company.
the room is cozy, illuminated only by the soft glow of the tn as you both immerse yourselves in film after film. the outside world feels distant and unimportant compared to the warmth you find together.
as the night wears on, you notice taylor's laughter fading, her smile not reaching her eyes like it usually does.
between movies, the conversations grow softer, more reflective, and you can tell that something is weighing on her mind. you know exactly what it is. tomorrow is her birthday, and for the first time in a long time, her parents won't be able to be with her. taylor had work to to the day after and couldn't flight over to nashville.
her parents had assured her it was fine, that they understood, but you can see the sadness lingering in her eyes.
when the latest movie ends, you glance at the clock. 11:58. a small spark of excitement flickers inside you, and you carefully slide out from under the blanket, trying not to disturb taylor too much.
"where are you going?" she asks, her voice tinged with curiosity and a hint of the melancholy she's been trying so hard to hide all night.
you give her a quick smile but don't answer directly.
"just stay here, i'll be right back," you say, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze before heading to the kitchen.
as you walk away, you can feel her eyes on your back, and you know she's probably feeling a little lonely, thinking about how this birthday isn't going to be like the others. but that's exactly why you've been planning this little surprise. you want her to know that, even if things aren't perfect, she's not alone.
in the kitchen, you move quickly, opening the fridge to pull out the small cake you bought earlier. It's simple but beautiful, with 'happy birthday, taylor' written in delicate icing. you place a few candles on top, your hands trembling slightly with anticipation as you light them. you can't wait to see the look on her face.
the clock hits midnight just as you finish. you carefully pick up the cake, the candles flickering softly, and head back to the living room. the moment you step into the doorway, taylor's eyes widen in surprise, her frown quickly replaced by a look of pure delight.
you start singing 'happy birthday,' your voice filled with warmth and love as you walk toward her, the cake glowing in your hands.
taylor's expression softens as she listens to you sing, the sadness in her eyes beginning to melt away. she watches you approach, and you can see the gratitude and affection in her gaze. the fact that you've done this for her, that you've been thinking about her even when she's been feeling down, makes her smile that much more special.
you reach the couch and finish the song, setting the cake in front of her. you quickly pull out your phone to capture the moment, your heart swelling as you watch taylor's face light up. the way her eyes sparkle, the small smile that plays on her lips—it's everything you hoped for.
"make a wish," you whisper, your voice gentle and full of love.
taylor closes her eyes for a moment, and you wonder what she's wishing for. when she blows out the candles, you keep recording, capturing the little happy dance she does on the couch afterward, her laughter light and genuine.
you stop the video and set your phone aside, looking at her with a tender smile.
"happy birthday, tay," you say softly, leaning in to kiss her cheek.
but taylor turns her head just in time, catching your lips with her own in a sweet, lingering kiss. When you pull back, her eyes are a little brighter, though still tinged with emotion.
"thank you," she murmurs, her voice full of gratitude.
"this means so much... you mean so much."
your heart swells with emotion, and you brush a strand of hair behind her ear.
"i just wanted you to feel special," you reply softly.
"even if things aren't perfect, i'm here with you. and that's what matters, right?"
she nods, a tear slipping down her cheek as she smiles.
"yeah... it really is. i'm so happy you're here."
you kiss her again, then cut two generous slices of cake. the two of you eat in comfortable silence, the sweetness of the cake lifting her spirits even more. each bite seems to remind her that she's loved, that she's not alone.
"your whole family knows about us right?" you ask between bites. she nodded.
"do you think i can post this video? i don't want tree to come after me and that will probably be a confirmation of our relationship, if it's fine with you" you ask her and she took some time to finish her bite.
"i would love to, so we wouldn't have to hide. i've been wanting to do it but i didn't know if you were sure with all the paparazzi and stuff coming after you" taylor explained excited to finally let the world know.
"perfect, then i'll post this without saying anything about us and see what people think okay?" she nodded and you posted the video.
when you're finished, you set the plates aside and pull her back into your arms. she snuggles into you, resting her head on your chest, her fingers tracing absent patterns on your arm.
"this is the best start of a birthday," she whispers, her voice soft and sincere.
"i was sad earlier... about my parents. but you've made everything better."
you smile and press a kiss to the top of her head.
"that's all i wanted," you say softly, holding her a little tighter.
"you deserve to feel loved, especially today."
as the credits of the final movie roll in the background, you feel her breathing slow, her body relaxing in your arms.
"thank you," she murmurs one last time, her voice barely audible as she starts to drift off to sleep.
you watch her for a moment, your heart full of love and contentment. then you kiss the top of her head again, whispering a final, "happy birthday, taylor... i love you," before letting yourself relax completely. within moments, you're asleep too, holding the woman you love close as the new day begins.
