you climbed into your car, taking one last deep breath before starting the engine. the little girl, your half-sister, was strapped into the backseat in a car seat your dad left next to your car. you glanced at her through the rearview mirror. her big, curious eyes were still filled with that mix of wonder and uncertainty, and you could feel the weight of the day pressing on your shoulders.
you put the car in drive and pulled out of the parking lot, heading towards a café where you planned to pick up breakfast for taylor. you wanted to make this morning a bit more pleasant for taylor, especially after everything that had happened. as you drove, you glanced back at the little girl.
"so, what's your name?" you asked, trying to break the silence.
the little girl looked up at you with a shy smile. "i'm emily."
"emily, that's a lovely name," you said, returning her smile in the mirror. "how old are you, emily?"
"i'm four," she replied proudly.
"that's a big age!" you said encouragingly. "do you know the name of your stuffed toy there?"
emily looked down at the stuffed animal in her lap, a small, well-loved bear. "his name is mr. snuggles."
"mr. snuggles," you repeated, smiling. "that's a very nice name for a bear. when's your birthday, emily?"
emily's face scrunched up in thought. "it's in october. my party was so much fun!"
"that sounds wonderful," you said, feeling a little pang of sadness. you had missed out on so much of the joy of childhood when you were growing up. "do you understand what's happening right now?"
emily shook her head, her small face clouding with confusion.
you sighed, trying to find the right words. "well, my name is yn. your dad—he's not feeling very good right now, so he couldn't take care of you. that's why i'm here with you. we're going to spend some time together until things are better."
emily's eyes widened. " are you're my sister?"
you nodded. "yes, i am."
emily's face lit up with a new curiosity. "wow, you look different from daddy! and this city is so big and loud."
you chuckled, feeling a strange tug at your heart. "yeah, new york is a pretty big place. it can be loud and busy sometimes. what do you think of it so far?"
emily's eyes sparkled with excitement as she looked out the window. "i see lots of big buildings and cars. and there are so many people. it's like a giant playground!"
you couldn't help but smile. the innocence and excitement in her voice were endearing. "it is a bit like a playground. there's always something new to see and do."
emily turned her attention back to you, her small voice filled with wonder. "are we going to get breakfast now?"
"yep," you said, nodding. "we're going to get some breakfast for taylor. what do you like to eat for breakfast?"
emily's face brightened even more. "i like pancakes! and waffles! and fruit!"
"well," you said, glancing at her through the mirror with a grin, "we might just be able to find some of those things. what's your favorite fruit?"
"strawberries!" emily said enthusiastically. "they're sweet and yummy."
"strawberries are great," you agreed, feeling a warmth growing in your chest. it was strange how quickly you were feeling a bond with her. "we'll see if we can find some for you."
