The night was my favorite. I could think, breathe, and be. Without a single disturbance from the sun or chirping of it's loving birds. I stuffed my walkman into my pocket as I approached the front door, looking back at my parents who were both occupied in work related chores. I slipped out, closing it carefully and quietly behind me. Sure enough they both saw and heard me, but they never bothered if I didn't make myself noticeable to begin with.
I pulled my headphones out, pressing play and bobbing my head as Green Apple Quick Step's Dizzy continued to play where it left off. I danced down the street as if no one was watching at all, but I knew they were. I couldn't hear them anyway, not a sound. Not the creeps staring at me like meat, not even my old vet buddy, if he was there...I didn't notice. The music felt too good and pure through the ears that heard too much for one day.
The park seemed to only grow closer and closer as I jammed to the gates and sooner through them...and there he was. Leo. I walked over to him, unable to hide a satisfied smile. He stopped dribbling the ball, turning as my presence grew nearer. I took my headphones and stuffed them into my pocket alongside my walkman.
"What's the score?" I smirked.
He rolled his eyes, turning to the hoop and making a clean shot. He went for the ball, passing it to me. "One to zero."
The smile upon my face spread wider. I took my jacket off, setting it down on the bench behind me. I dribbled down the court, sprinting quickly to the hoop and shooting. For once without having to try again, I made it. I turned to him for approval, his eyes widened with a proud grin. I dribbled down the court as far as I could make it before he then stole the ball.
I ran after him quickly, pushing my hair out of my eyes to better focus. His eyes caught mine, and stared into them as if for the first time. I then took the ball as I knew he was fully distracted. I shot again, missing but not giving up for a second as I caught the ball immediately as it bounced off the rim.
He chased me back to the hoop, I jumped quickly to the right then sprinted to the left, throwing him off. He laughed as he still managed to take the ball. He hopped slightly as he shot and scored. I caught the ball as it came my way, bouncing it to him. He caught it and tucked it between his arm and side.
"Why have you been coming here so often?" He asked.
I shrugged slowly, "I just get tired of being at home..."
"Yeah...me too. I'm barely ever home just because I don't wanna listen to my mom nag me all day." He had the cutest laugh. I watched him as he ran his fingers through his hair.
"Yeah, yeah same." I lied.
"I was getting ready to head home though...just so I wouldn't have to hear about being out all night." He said.
"That's okay, I'll just hang out by myself for a while." I looked around at the emptiness before my eyes.
"You could come over if you want, I think my mom's sleeping anyway."
"Oh...oh no, I can't." I said quickly, knowing my that if my parents found out at all I'd be dead.
"You don't actually have to come in...hey there's this spot that I really really love, on the roof of my apartment complex. All I do is climb the fire escapes, and there's a beautiful array of stars..." He said.
I turned to the bench, grabbing my jacket and noticing his notebook. I picked it up, opening it slowly as I answered, "well...I'm in no hurry to get home...sure."
He grabbed the notebook from me, folding it and digging it into the pocket of his jeans.
"Why can't I read it?" I asked.
