The city was a blur outside the window, its neon lights flickering like distant memories. Luke sat silently in the passenger seat of Zack's car, his mind swirling with the revelations of the past hour. Tyler, his brother, was alive—but only just. Four years in a coma, and not a word to anyone. Their father's betrayal cut deep, but deeper still was the sorrow that came from knowing how much Zack had suffered in silence. The night air was crisp as they finally pulled up to Zack's apartment building, the engine's hum fading as Zack turned off the car. For a moment, neither of them moved, both caught in the gravity of what they had just uncovered. "I can't believe he's still alive," Zack finally whispered, his voice barely audible. He leaned back in his seat, staring up at the darkened windows of his apartment. "All this time, I thought I'd lost him for good. I tried to move on, but... I never stopped loving him, Luke. Not for a single day. "Luke's chest tightened. He had seen the pain in Zack's eyes, the way his voice cracked when he spoke of Tyler. And now, knowing that Tyler was still alive—however fragile that life was—brought a new kind of agony to the surface.

"I'm sorry, Zack," Luke said, his voice thick with regret. "I didn't know. None of us did. My father... he kept it from everyone. Even me. "Zack's hands clenched the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. "Why would he do that? Why keep something so... so cruel from us?" Luke shook his head, the weight of the question hanging heavy between them. "I don't know. But I'm done with the lies. I need to face the truth, no matter how much it hurts. And that means seeing Tyler." Zack looked at Luke, a flicker of something indefinable passing across his face—hope, perhaps, or maybe fear. "We'll go to him," he said, his voice steady. "But first, there's something I need to tell you. Something I should have told you a long time ago." They got out of the car, the cool night air biting at their skin. The city seemed quieter here, the buzz of traffic and voices dulled by the late hour. Inside Zack's apartment building, the familiar scent of old wood and faded carpet greeted them, and Luke found a strange comfort in it. It was as if the walls themselves had soaked up the years of Zack's life, holding onto fragments of the person he had been—and the person he had loved. Once inside, Zack flicked on the lights, casting a warm glow over the small living room. It was a modest space, filled with memories in the form of books, photos, and the faint scent of coffee that clung to the air. Luke's eyes were drawn to a photo on the wall—a younger Zack and Tyler, their arms slung around each other's shoulders, laughing at something unseen. The carefree joy on their faces felt like a lifetime ago. Zack noticed Luke's gaze and offered a sad smile. "That was taken at uni. Before everything got complicated."

They both sat down on the couch, the distance between them filled with unspoken words. Zack seemed to gather his thoughts, his eyes focused on the floor as he began to speak. "Tyler and I... we had something special," Zack said quietly. "It started in our second year of university. We were best friends, always together. But somewhere along the way, it became more than that. We fell in love." Luke's breath caught in his throat. Hearing Zack say the words made it real in a way it hadn't been before. His brother, the person he had looked up to his whole life, had been in love with his best friend. And it had been kept from him, hidden in the shadows of their lives. "Why didn't you tell me?" Luke asked, his voice filled with a mix of hurt and curiosity. "Because Tyler didn't want you to know," Zack replied, his eyes meeting Luke's with an intensity that spoke of years of suppressed emotion. "He was afraid. Afraid of how you'd react, afraid of what it would mean for your relationship. He didn't want to complicate things, especially with everything that was going on in your life, you being a rebel and all . So we kept it a secret from everyone. Even from you." Zack's voice softened, laced with a deep sadness. "But it wasn't just some fling, Luke. We loved each other—truly loved each other. But we were also scared. Scared of what that love meant, scared of how it would change everything. And then, just when we thought we had time to figure it all out, he got shot." Luke listened in silence, the weight of Zack's words settling heavily on his shoulders. He could almost see it now—the late-night conversations, the stolen glances, the love that had grown between them, hidden from the world. A love that had been abruptly interrupted, leaving nothing but pain and unanswered questions in its wake.

"I was devastated when I heard about the accident," Zack continued, his voice trembling. "I was so sure I'd lost him forever. And when I thought he was dead... I didn't know how to go on. I tried to move forward, but I couldn't let go. Not really." Luke felt a pang of guilt. He had been so wrapped up in his own pain, his own confusion, that he hadn't considered how much Zack must have suffered. And now, learning that Tyler was alive, that he had been kept in the dark for all these years... it was too much." And now that you know he's still alive?" Luke asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Zack let out a shaky breath. "I don't know what to feel. Relief, anger, hope... it's all mixed up inside me. But one thing hasn't changed—I still love him. I never stopped. "The admission hung in the air, heavy and raw. Luke reached out, placing a hand on Zack's arm, a silent promise of support. "We'll get through this, Zack. Together. We'll figure out how to help Tyler, no matter what it takes. "Zack's eyes glistened with unshed tears, a small, sad smile playing on his lips. "Thank you, Luke. For being here. For understanding." They sat in silence for a moment, the bond between them strengthened by the shared pain and the secrets that had finally come to light. Outside, the city continued its ceaseless rhythm, unaware of the lives it held within its grasp.

" You know what pains me the most? My father kept Tyler being a secret for whatever reason he had but each day since then he blamed me for his death knowing very well that he is alive somewhere. I suffered so much in the hands from that man, literally. He used to beat me up, call me names or say something really hurtful towards me which would always have me asking myself what it is I did to him. At some point I even started questioning if I was his biological son. The father I knew  who used to tuck me in at night, read me bedtime stories and take me to get ice cream when I was younger is not the monster I live with now. " Luke said as tears started streaming down his face. " I am so sorry you had to go through all that. If anything I applaud the strength and patience you have had all this time putting up with that kind of abuse. You know what ? I am too sober for this sad story that comes with a lot to unpack. Let's go grab a couple of cold ones at the bar down the street." Luke agrees with him , " But wait, I am only twenty, I do not think they will let me in". Zack grabs his car keys on the table and goes " Liquor store it is then. Nothing like getting drunk and talking about your feelings while sitting on the hood of your car while staring the stars in the sky".
