The city streets were cold and unfamiliar, but they had become Luke’s refuge in the days since he ran away from the hospital. Living with Zack had provided him a sense of safety, however temporary, but the constant thought of his father haunted him. Chris was still out there—pulling strings, manipulating lives, just as he had always done. And despite all the miles Luke had tried to put between them, there was a magnetic force pulling him back toward that confrontation.
After three days of laying low, Zack entered the apartment, his face tight with tension. “Luke, they’re getting close. Bridget has somehow managed to track and find our new location.” Melanie who was in the kitchen making breakfast spoke up,”Shit, it is probably my fault. I think she must have used that tracking app on her phone to find me since she already had my phone tracker added to hers when we were looking for my phone the da we went shopping a few years back.”
Luke tensed. He had known this moment was coming, but hearing Zack confirm it made the urgency in his chest swell. His family was closing in, and it wouldn’t be long before they found him. That same morning Bridget left the apartment in a hurry without them knowing, had called telling them that Chris had suddenly fallen ill and collapsed in his study whilst he and Roxanne were having a heated argument over all his confessions. She was urging him to come home and that if he did not her hand would be forced, sending Boris and Titus to forcefully retrieve him with their other bodyguards, so they chose to run away before they got to them.
“I can’t run forever, Zack,” Luke muttered, rubbing his forehead as anxiety gnawed at him. “I’ve been hiding from them my whole life. It’s time I faced him.”
Zack’s eyes widened. “You don’t mean—Chris? You’re going back to him?”
Luke nodded slowly, staring down at his hands. “There’s no point in running anymore. Not from my own father. I need to end this, one way or another.”
Zack grabbed his arm, the panic clear in his voice. “You don’t owe that man anything, Luke. After what he did to you, to Tyler... he doesn’t deserve a second of your time.”
Luke sighed, shaking his head. “This isn’t about him. It’s about me. I need to face him, for myself.”
Before Zack could protest further, Melanie heard car tires screetching and went to check them out through the window of the place they were hiding at,her eyes clouded with concern. “They’re here,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Bridget, Titus, Boris—they’re outside.”
Luke felt his heart skip a beat. He wasn’t ready, but it didn’t matter anymore. The time for hiding was over.
Luke’s heart pounded as he watched from the window of the loft they were in, seeing Bridget and Titus step out of the black SUV. Bridget, determined and fiery as ever, scanned the street, her eyes flickering with a mixture of anger and worry. She had always been protective, but this time it felt different—there was a desperation in her movements.
Luke’s phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a message from Bridget: “I know you’re in there. We need to talk. Please.”
Zack, standing by the door, looked at Luke, torn. “You don’t have to do this. We can find another way.”
But Luke shook his head. “It’s time.”
With a deep breath, he opened the door and stepped outside, the cold evening air biting at his skin. Bridget spotted him immediately, her face softening for just a moment before hardening again with resolve.
“Luke,” she called, her voice sharp but laced with emotion. “You need to come home. This whole cat and mouse game you have me playing riht now just isn’t gonna cut it for me. ”
He walked toward her, feeling the weight of each step. “I can’t go home, Bridget. Not until I finish this.”
Bridget frowned. “What are you talking about?Finish what? Dad’s sick, Luke. There’s no time for whatever it is you are planning on doing. ”
Luke clenched his fists, his jaw tight. “I’m not playing games. You don’t know what he’s done, Bridget. You don’t know the lies, the manipulation, the shit he put me through… He ruined our lives, mine and Tyler’s. And now, I’m supposed to just forget all of that because he’s sick?”
Bridget’s face twisted with pain. “I know what he did, Luke. But he’s still our father. And if you don’t go to him now, you might find yourself regretting it for the rest of your life… He loves us you know.” Boris and Titus let out low chuckles then cleared their throats when the two siblings turned to look at them, then continued to hold their stern looks .
Luke’s heart ached, the anger and hurt battling inside him. He had spent so long trying to escape Chris’s grip, and now, when he had a chance to confront him, his sister was asking him to forgive. It wasn’t that simple.
Behind them, Titus and Boris stood silently by the car, watching the scene unfold but not intervening. Zack and Melanie stayed inside the loft, also listening in, ready to step in if needed.
“Love who? You maybe. Okay fine, I will choose to listen to you and go see him but only on my own terms, Bridget,” Luke finally said, his voice trembling. “I cannot keep avoiding your father. I need to face him for what he’s done, to get answers.”
Bridget’s eyes widened. “You can’t just go there and confront him in his condition guns blazing. He’s barely hanging on!You need to be calm before you see him.”
“I don’t care,” Luke snapped, his voice rising. “He needs to hear what he’s done to us. To Tyler. To all of us.”
Bridget looked at him, torn between loyalty to their father and understanding Luke’s pain. After a long, tense silence, she finally nodded. “Fine. I’ll take you to him.” Luke signalled for his friends to come out.” I will only come to the house only if they tag along .They have stood by me through every tear and every breakdown. We started this together and we will finish it together . My terms remember. And we will come to the house in two hours, take it or leave it. That’s the best compromise I can do for you.”Titus , Boris and Bridget got into the car then she said “ Do not take too long. Do not run because we will find you and we won’t be nice aout dragging your ass to the house. You can count on it.And if those two try to stop us, I will personally put a bullet between their eyes” Her voice sounded serious as she told them. They nodded their heads showing they understand what they were being told and what would happen if they went against it. Bridget then smiled at them widely “Great, we understand each other, I just got my nails done and this whole tracking you down thing is ruining them, “she said cheerfully,” love you dingus, see you soon. Byeeee” and they drove off.
“And to think I shared my best bottle of whiskey with her” said Zack as they watched the SUV disappear into the distance.
They went back into the loft to prepare to leave. “ Wait Luke why did you ask for two hours to get there when you know we will be there in like 45 minutes tops with the way Zack drives?” Melanie asked.” You were making breakfast before they showed up. There is no way I am leaving a whole plate of bacon, sausages and eggs untouched, especially when I know there is a high chance Chris will kill me today.Imagine standing there saying something serious and then midway my stomach speaks louder than me. If I go out today, atleast Ishould die having ate a good meal.I need the energy to face the dude”, he says as he sits down to eat.
'This is going to be one long ass day', Melanie thought to herself.
