VERONICA VALDEZ

I was so mad.
And sad.
And I felt so betrayed.

I'd felt all those feelings before, but now, that Theo was actually back? Multiplied by ten. I felt so many different kinds of feelings it was hard to separate and recognize them.
I wished they'd just told me the truth. I would've understood. Of course, it was 'classified information', but I'm not stupid. I could keep my mouth shut. The fact they left me in the dark spoke volumes.
They don't trust me.
I knew that now. To be honest, I didn't trust them either. Not after that stunt.

"Veronica?"
I turned my gaze towards the wooden door. Enzo promised he'd explain everything.
He better.
"Come in." My voice felt distant. As if it wasn't me who spoke, but someone else and I was just observing from the side. I didn't even feel my mouth move.
Enzo opened the door slowly, carefully. It was his style, not like Mattheo who basically kicks the door in every time he enters.
And people say I have anger management issues.
"You alright?" He asked, slipping through the door and closing it behind him. His movements could almost be described as timid, like he was trying not to piss me off. And that in itself was pissing me off.
"No," I replied. I was glad Theo and Enzo were both alive, but it didn't ease the feeling of betrayal.
Enzo dipped his head slightly, which made a pang of guilt hit me in the face for a brief second.
It wasn't their choice, Veronica. Show a bit of mercy.
I fought with myself for a moment as I watched him take a seat on the chair in front of my desk, but eventually I felt my sharp emotions soften up a bit. "Sorry," I mumbled.
"It's alright," Enzo sighed, raising his head just enough to look at me. "You have a right to be mad.""You weren't given a choice," I continued. Now I felt bad for Theo, too.
How did our roles reverse so quickly?
"Yeah, I was not. But this is still so fucked up. I promise I can tell you everything now. Just ask," Enzo sighed.
I stayed quiet for a moment. Now that I had the opportunity to know everything, why could my brain not come up with any questions?
"So Mattheo told me you originally left because Voldemort gave you a task," I began, to which Enzo quickly responded with a nod. His fingers were tapping almost nervously on the surface of my desk and my eyes got caught on the movement for a brief moment before I realized I should probably continue. "And you couldn't tell me because it was classified information."
"Right," Enzo replied. "If Voldemort ever got to know we'd leaked the info, we'd—I don't even want to think about it, but you get what I mean."
"Yeah," I let out, my words coming out as soft sighs. "Everything is just so complicated. I almost wish this summer never had happened. No, not almost. I do wish that."
"I don't," Enzo replied, a small smile tugging on his lips. I'd missed the sight. "I would've never gotten to know you better if certain things hadn't happened. I'm sure Theo thinks the same way."
Theo. Right. I'd have to speak to him too, and probably apologize.
Oh God.
"I guess that's one way to look at it too," I answered, breaking the small silence that'd already settled into the room after Enzo's sentence.
"You mentioned a note back there," Enzo stated, changing the subject. "What note? Have I missed something?""Oh, you've missed a lot," I hummed, feeling the atmosphere lighten a bit. Enzo had that effect on me. I thought he had that effect on everyone. "When I went to look for you the day I noticed you'd left, I obviously went to Theo's room. And there was this piece of paper on his bed that I assumed and still do is something he left there. I mean, who else would've it been? There was a number written on the paper and I tried to text it like a million times."
"V, you do realize, that if it wasn't Theo, you could have texted quite literally anyone, right?" Enzo asked, frowning.
"I wasn't thinking, okay? The only friends I have here had left without saying anything, and I find a number on one's bed. Obviously, I texted it," I scoffed in response. I understood what the meaning behind his words were and why he looked so worried, but at that moment it felt like a reasonable thing to do. Besides, it's still not confirmed it was not Theo's. Maybe he was just being a dick and ignoring me—with a good reason, but still—. Or maybe it wasn't a phone number at all. Maybe it was something else meant for someone else.
"Yeah, I get that, but you gotta be more careful," Enzo sighed. "This is not a game. We have to ask Theo if he left it."
"Yes, we do, and God help if he did," I huffed as I moved on the bed so that my back was resting against the headboard.
"So, anything else?" Enzo asked after a minute. "Has Tom done anything?"
"Uhh, yeah," I replied matter of factly. "Firstly, he invited me to his room."
I saw the look on his face, and quickly continued. "Don't worry, we only spoke a little. Nothing else. He was trying to feed me this crap of me and Theo's 'relationship' thing not going to last for long. He obviously didn't tell me the real reason of why, but that's besides the point.
"Then, I also kind of eavesdropped on him and his father," I admitted, purposefully not saying the name. It just never tasted good in my mouth.
"Hold on, hold on," Enzo shushed, "you did what?"
"I eavesdropped on them."
"I want to ask so many things, but how is the most important one," Enzo stated, looking at me in slight disbelief.
"You know, I was just walking in the hallways and then suddenly I heard Tom speak behind one of the doors. They were apparently talking about the marriage," I replied, feeling a small hint of satisfaction from his reaction.
I can do stuff too, you little shit.
Enzo looked at me eagerly. "What did they say?"
I took a deep breath. "Well, for starters, Tom seemed way too excited about the marriage. And Vold—his father, was saying it's his first 'milestone', and that they'll get into 'preparations' as soon as you two arrive—"
I cut off my own sentence as I saw Enzo's face turn pale white. "What? I mean, I know it's early but surely they can't do this before I'm—"
"V, I love you, and we'll continue with this later, but I have to go," Enzo let out, already halfway to the door.
"What? Did I say something? Enzo!"
