VERONICA VALDEZ

I woke up at the sound of my phone's alarm. It was time to get up, so I'd make it to work in time. I groaned, and got out of bed, putting the alarm off. I quickly made my way to the bathroom, dropping my clothes on the floor. I looked at my face in the mirror, and saw dark circles under my eyes.
This will only get better by a cold shower, I thought and got in the shower. I turned the water on and got under it, letting the cold water run all over my body. My thoughts were wandering, as always.
I had a pretty big and modern apartment, all thanks to my dad. He was a wealthy wizard, working in the ministry of magic. His name was known almost everywhere, and his pureblood heritage was appreciated and respected. I didn't know much about his work, only that he was in good terms with Lucius Malfoy.

I got out of the shower, and wrapped one towel around my body, as I used the other one to dry my long blonde hair. I picked the clothes from the floor and tossed them to the basket full of dirty clothes I'd have to wash later today. Then I proceeded to go back to my bedroom and opened my wardrobe. I took out my uniform for the cafe I worked for and some underwear. I got dressed and put on some makeup, before turning to look at myself from the mirror once more.
Not bad, I thought to myself. My long blonde hair was hanging somewhere around my waist, as I combed it with my fingers. It was almost fully dry, just in time before I'd have to leave.
I quickly brushed it through, before grabbing a yogurt out of the fridge and eating it as fast as I could. I was already a little late, I really spent too much time in the shower...

Soon I was ready, and I hurried to put on my shoes and grabbing my wand, before apparating to Diagon Alley.

The street was packed with witches and wizards, and I had to push my way through the crowd to get to the cafe. Soon enough I managed to get to the door, and I slipped in from the crowded alley.

"Veronica! Finally, what took you so long?"
I was startled with my boss's voice, and I looked up at him. "Oh, sorry. I woke up late and the street was quite busy."
Just a small lie...
"I understand. Don't let it happen again, though. I need you here on time" he continued, with a kind but stern tone.
"Yes, of course" I smiled apologetically and went behind the counter. Usually no one came to the cafe this early in the morning, so I had other things on my to do-list. Baking, for example.
I tied my hair back and went to the kitchen, taking out the ingredients for cinnamon rolls.

Time flew by, and when clock hit 2 pm, more customers started arriving. Soon the cafe was full, as usual, and I was busy with taking orders and passing them to my friend Alice, who also worked there. I had just taken the line's last person's order, and I was about to sigh in relief, until I heard the door opening again.
God help me.
I looked up from behind the counter, and my eyes widen slightly at the sight. The two persons I definitely wasn't expecting. Draco Malfoy and Tom Riddle. This definitely wasn't a pleasant surprise. We went to Hogwarts at the same time, though they were two years older than me. I was in my fifth year while they were in their seventh. We didn't talk much, but for some reason, when we did, it always ended up in both of us throwing nasty comments at each other. It was summer break, and I hadn't seen either of them in over a month, but now they were here.

I put on a fake smile and said in a sarcastic tone, "Hi, how can I help you?"
"Veronica Valdez," Draco grinned and glanced at Tom. "Long time no see."
"Indeed. How can I help you?" I repeated, staring at the annoying smirk on Draco's face. I felt irritated, but tried not to show it as I knew both of their family's heritages. Draco was the son of Lucius Malfoy, and Tom was Lord Voldemort's first son. Any completely sane person didn't want to end up on their black list.
"Coffee for both," Tom said finally when Draco stayed silent. Tom put the money on the counter and glanced at Draco. "No milk," he added.
"Got it, so black like your heart," I nodded and turned my gaze away trying to hold back a grin.
"You know it," Tom smirked and made his way to a table with Draco.

About 10 minutes later I took the coffees to their table.
"Here you go, enjoy," I gave a fake smile before disappearing behind the counter. I looked at my phone. The time was 14.45, and my shift would end at 15. I spent the last 15 minutes hiding in the kitchen, while Alice was taking the orders. After my shift ended, I hurried to my locker and grabbed my stuff.
I apparated back to my apartment, and tossed my bag on the floor, next to my shoes. I had forgotten to eat at the cafe, and I was starting to feel very lightheaded so I made my way to the kitchen. I opened the fridge and considered my options. Feta-salad, chicken and rice or leftover pasta.
I didn't have time to choose, before I heard my phone ringing on the counter where I had left it. I groaned and slammed the fridge's door shut.

I guess my late lunch can wait for a little more...

I took my phone and glanced at the screen.
Dad.

I picked it up and brought the phone to my ear.
"Hey sweetheart," He started. "Do you have a moment? It's important."
"Yeah, of course dad," I answered, trying to sound as nice as possible, but I was getting hangry...
"Good, I'll get straight to the point. I have gotten a new job offer. There's a better salary than in the ministry, and I've actually considered it for a while now," He said carefully, apparently trying not to scare me.
I could hear the nervousness in his tone, and I didn't like it. "Where? Who's offering you this job?"
"Veronica, sweetie. I know you won't like what you're about to hear, but I promise you, it isn't what you think."
I could feel myself getting more worried by the second, and I turned my voice more stern. "Who?"
"Lord Voldemort."
