"Can't believe you guys are at this lame party."Aria heard someone say from the kitchen. She glanced over, seeing Michelle spread a generous layer of jam over her toast, the knife scraping against the bread with a crunching sound.
Ned, also glancing over from where he stood, raised an eyebrow. "But you're here too."
Michelle paused mid-bite, an exaggeratedly innocent look on her face. "Am I?" she retorted, her tone dripping with mock surprise.
With a bite of her toast, Michelle turned on her heel and sauntered away.
Aria smiled. She approached with the same unchanging smile with which she had first entered the house—the smile of a perfectly friendly, pretty freshman.
The witch wore a simple, form-fitting black dress that reached just above her knees. The dress had a scoop neckline and short sleeves, paired with a pair of white sneakers.
One thing that made Aria feel a bit on edge was the fact that she hadn't brought her wand with her to the party.
There wasn't really a good place to stow it anyway, and Steve had insisted she wouldn't need it. He had encouraged her to relax and enjoy herself, to experience a bit of normal teenage life.
Aria had considered bringing her multipurpose 'watch' instead, but again, Steve had been clear: a 'normal teenage party' didn't involve gadgets or concealed weapons.
So, she had left the watch behind, along with her wand.
"Oh. My. God. Aria!"
Aria turned around to see a flash of brown hair tackle her with a hug.
"You look— wow. You should wear dresses more often, they really suit you." Liz rambled on with a big smile, her eyes racking Aria up and down.
"I was this close to wearing Bruce's lab coat" Aria responded dryly, trying to be her usual witty self, but it had been betrayed by the visible blush on her face.
"Aria." Liz scolded playfully, before her eyes widened. Wordlessly, she tugged Aria with her.
She dragged her friend with her as she approached the funny boys from earlier with a bright smile, her voice cutting through the party chatter. "Hey, guys. Cool hat, Ned."
Ned gave a friendly nod. "Hi, Liz. Hi , Aria."
Peter's response came out a bit too high-pitched, betraying his nerves. "Hi, Aria." His gaze then shifted to Liz. "Hi, Liz "
Aria snorted. "Hi."
Liz's smile widened. "I'm so happy you guys came. There's pizza and drinks. Help yourself."
