James Potter has, as far as he could remember, always dreamt of being a girl dad.

And when Lily had told him she was pregnant, those dreams took on a life of their own. The news had barely settled in when James was already making bets on the baby's presumed gender.

"She's going to be the first female Marauder, you know," he would always say, his eyes sparkling with the same mischief that had gotten him into and out of trouble so many times before. "I'm going to teach her everything we did. No—better than that, I'm going to teach her to outdo us. She'll be the greatest prankster Hogwarts has ever seen. Just imagine it, Pads! She'll have the whole school on its toes."

Sirius would laugh, clapping James on the back, but there was a fondness in his eyes, too, as he listened to his best friend dream out loud.

He'd teach her all about quidditch— he could already picture it: his little girl with windswept hair, soaring through the air on a broomstick as the crowd cheered her on.

He imagined what she would look like—maybe she'd have Lily's red hair, or perhaps she'd inherit his wild, unruly locks. He thought about all the pranks they would pull together, how she'd be the ringleader of her own mischievous crew, causing chaos in the halls of Hogwarts.

And it wasn't just about the pranks. James dreamt of the quiet moments, too. Teaching her how to fly, how to play chess, how to defend herself in a duel. He saw himself being the kind of dad who would be her greatest champion, her protector, and her partner in crime. He imagined her running to him with scraped knees, and he'd kneel down, gently tending to her with reassurances and jokes to make her smile.

James wanted to be the dad who would show his daughter that she could be anything she wanted to be—and that she could do it better than anyone else.

One of those nights, as he lay next to Lily, James would whisper to her belly, "You're going to be amazing, little one. We're going to have so much fun, just you wait." Lily had laughed, her hand resting on her growing bump, teasing him about getting too ahead of himself. And then "Little ones, James."

James had froze, the words barely registering at first. Then, as the meaning began to sink in, he'd turned to Lily with wide eyes, his breath catching in his throat. "Twins?" he whispered, his voice laced with equal parts disbelief and awe. The very idea had seemed impossible, yet there it had been, staring him in the face.

He could see them now, two tiny figures running around, getting into trouble, and learning the art of mischief from the best. Would they both be girls? Or perhaps one of each? The possibilities were endless, and his mind struggled to keep up.

But amidst the whirlwind of thoughts, one feeling stood out above the rest: a deep, overwhelming love. He knew, in that moment, that no matter what, he would be there for them—both of them.

He would be the father they needed, the one they could rely on, just as he had always dreamed.

And then, that night happened.
