It was late, the office was mostly empty, and she was sitting at her desk, staring blankly at the computer screen. She was supposed to be working, but her mind was elsewhere. Thoughts of Noir, of what happened, of what might happen next, kept swirling in her head. She felt trapped.
Her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her thoughts. It was a message from Maeve.
"Meet me on the roof in five."
Y/N frowned. Maeve was direct, sure, but this was strange, even for her. Something was up. She grabbed her jacket and made her way to the elevator, trying to push the anxiety down.
The elevator ride felt like it took forever. Each floor they passed only made the knot in her stomach tighten. When she finally reached the roof, the cool night air hit her, but it didn't do much to calm her nerves.
Maeve was there, standing by the edge, looking out over the city. She turned when she heard Y/N approaching.
"Got your message," Y/N said, trying to sound casual.
Maeve didn't waste time with pleasantries. "We need to talk, and I don't have much time. Homelander's onto you."
Y/N's blood ran cold. She had suspected it, but hearing it confirmed like this was something else. "Fuck," she muttered under her breath. "What did he say?"
"He's paranoid as hell lately. He brought in Sister Sage to sniff out whoever's working against him. She's good, really fucking good. I wouldn't be surprised if she already has you on her radar."
Y/N leaned against the wall, running a hand through her hair. This was bad, really bad. "What do I do? If they find out—"
"They haven't yet," Maeve cut her off. "But they're close. You need to be extra careful now. And I'm not just talking about your usual bullshit. You can't trust anyone. Not Noir, not anyone."
Y/N blinked. "Wait, what? Noir?"
Maeve sighed. "I don't know what's going on between you two, but he's been acting weird. Sage is watching him closely, trying to figure out what he's up to. If you're involved with him in any way, it's only a matter of time before they use that against you."
Y/N's head was spinning. Noir was being watched too? This was turning into a fucking nightmare. "Shit, Maeve, what the hell do I do now? I'm supposed to be gathering intel, but I'm running out of time."
Maeve walked closer, her expression serious. "I'm not telling you to run, not yet. But if it comes down to it, you better be ready. I can only cover for you so much before they start questioning me too."
Y/N nodded, her mind racing. "Thanks, Maeve. I mean it."
Maeve gave her a tight smile. "Don't thank me yet. We're all in the same boat here. Just make sure you don't sink it."
Y/N watched as Maeve left. She needed to clear her head, figure out her next move, but nothing was coming to her. Everything felt like it was spiraling out of control.
A/N~ Guys I wanna make this book more dramatic, time for some actual action.
P.S~ This is a filler chapter, I don't really like it.
