Arundhati Shah wished she had a lightning bolt to electrocute her father. Like, who stops her from watching Lord of the Rings? With Swedish Fish? Her father. Her father did.
"You need to socialize Aru! It'll be great for the firm and for my image if the senior partner's daughter comes! I'm not changing my mind Aru. You're coming to that party." he had said amidst the loud clanging of putting away the dishes.
"I just don't understand why it can't be another party!" she exclaimed. "And I know what you're getting at. No, I'm not getting married soon. And no, I'm not becoming a lawyer."
Suyodhana rolled his eyes. "You've been single for too long Aru! At first I was grateful for it, but now I'm starting to worry. We need to set one up soon, people are starting to ask. "
"Those people can take their questions and shove it up their-"
Aru's words were stopped by the sound of Krithika Shah coming down the stairs.
"What's going on over here?" she asked, looking pointedly at her. What did I do? she thought, confused.
"She doesn't wanna go to the firm's party."
'Aru, it's one party. Who knows, maybe you'll have fun!"
"Yeah. Fun." she grumbled, walking up the stairs.
"Can't wait to be back at college!" she yelled from upstairs. "We know!" Suyodhana yelled back.
She went to text the groupchat, consisting of her two best friends.

She didn't even wanna get married. She was only twenty years old but typical Indian culture to try and set up a marriage so soon. Whatever. Her dad was so set on it anyways. She'll just find some way to get out of it. Somehow.
A week later, she sprinted to the door and opened it to find her two best friends, Brynne Tvarika Lakshmi Balamuralikrishna Rao and Yamini Kapoor Mercado Lopez at the door, Brynne's famous lasagna in her hands.
"I brought my lasagna!" Brynne said, smiling and plopping her things down on the kitchen counter.
"And you're probably out of hand sanitizer, so I brought that too." Mini said, crossing her arms and handing it to Aru.
Aru grinned, elbow bumping Mini and hugging Brynne.
"Anyways, I have some fascinating movie options-"
"No. You're banned from picking movies Mini. That last one on the germs found in the human mouth," Brynne shuddered. "Just please no."
"Fine then. I guess I'm the only one who cares about hygiene here." Mini responded haughtily. Aru snorted.
They sat down on the couch while Aru got some popcorn out from the kitchen. "My parents are out on a Christmas Eve date night, so we have a solid four hours." She came back into the living room with Swedish Fish, Oreos, and popcorn. Brynne ripped open the box of oreos, while Mini chose to save hers for the movie.
"So-" Brynne asked, mouth full. "What's the deal about this New Years Eve party thing? Didn't really understand when you explained it on the phone, you kept cutting out."
"Ugh, it's actually so bad. My dad wants me to go to this party his law firm's partners are throwing, so him, his friend, and a couple of other old people, to 'socialize'," Aru put air quotes around the word socialize. "-which basically means that he wants to marry me off to a rich lawyer at his firm and he thinks it'll convince me to go into law." Aru rolled her eyes, stuffing her mouth with Swedish Fish.
"Which law firm does your dad work at again?"
"Shah and Acharya Law."
"Haha, that sucks. My friend's being forced to go there too. Think his dad made him the photographer."
"Who knows Aru, maybe you'll have fun!" Mini said, turning on the TV.
"Mini, look me in the eye. You really think I'd rather go to a super crowded party full of fancy, rich, old people then watch the ball drop and binge Marvel in my pjs?"
Mini looked her directly in the eye, then sighed. "No."
"Exactly."
"Well, at least we have Christmas Eve!"
"Yep."
The next week, a couple days before the party, Suyodhana had stopped Aru in the hall. "Wear something nice to this party. Not one of your usual Marvel shirts and jeans."
Aru had responded with a quick pat on his head, to which he rolled his eyes at.
