Aiden fumbled with the sparkling gold ring he got Aru, studded with diamonds that glimmered in the sun. He had gotten a yaksha merchant from the Night Bazaar to enchant it so that when she rubbed it (she had taken on a nervous habit of rubbing her fingers when she was nervous), she could see photos he had taken of him and her throughout the years on the ring, (but it was subtle), from when they first started dating at fifteen and sixteen, to now, almost eight years later, at twenty three and twenty four.
Asking Krithika for her blessing felt like his heart was gonna explode. He was nervous, and he was sweating a lot, and he couldn't really speak when she asked him if he wanted any chai. Everyone had noticed it, how ever since he got the ring, he'd been on edge, especially with Aru.
"Is he gonna break up with me?" he'd overheard Aru ask Brynne and Mini over the phone the day before. "He keeps ignoring me and he's getting super nervous around me and I don't know why."
Brynne, the only person besides Krithika and Malini he'd told about his plans just sighed. "Be patient with him."
Aru had narrowed her eyes and shot Brynne a bunch of questions, while Brynne tried to dodge them as best she could, and Mini just tried to stop them both from fighting.

Today evening had to be perfect.
Aru opened the door and Aiden was starstruck for a good minute. She had on a flowy, short sleeved, pale yellow dress that was squarenecked and tied in the front, reaching to her knees. Her shoes were black Converse and to top it all off, a bow in her hair and gold lightning bolt earrings. Electricity spangled up her arm from Vajra.
"Something on my face Wifey?" She asked, crossing her arms. He looked in her eyes and couldn't think for a second.
"Uhh, no."
She rolled her eyes, smiling and taking his hand, heading to the car. "Good. If there was I couldn't take it off anyways. Mini isn't here to supply me with wet wipes."
He went into the car, reached into his satchel, and gave her wet wipes. She snorted, putting them in her purse.
They stopped at a familiar place and Aru brightened.
"I don't know if you've heard of this place, it's the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture." He said, beaming. She squealed, even though for eighteen years, she'd lived in that place daily, hanging her backpack on Greg the stone elephant and guiding people around it, getting lost in the stories.
She ran inside and Aiden ran after her, laughing.
Aiden checked in and Krithika Shah guided them around the museum, even though he knew very well Aru already knew all of this information. After all, it had been ingrained into her mind for years, leading visitors around.
Her breath slowly hitched onto where the Lamp of Bharata was, where she had lit it eleven years ago and the Sleeper awoke. Aiden had to thank him for something though. Without the Sleeper, would he have ever fallen in love with Aru?
The room was dimly lit, and the glow from the statues seemed to be the only source of light in the room, apart from Shadowfax, which he had reluctantly trusted with Aru's mom to record and capture this moment.
"Are you okay Wifey?" she asked softly. In the back, his gaze caught on the mural of the Pandava brothers in battle. Those statues over there, where he'd caught her spying on Kara and him when they were just kids. And right here, in this spot, was where they kissed for the first time.
Now or never Acharya.
"Aru?" He said, his hand closing around hers. She looked at him, as if wondering what were to happen next.
"I love you. I've loved you since you told me you knew where I lived, since I had to go questing with you in middle school, since I lost you for two months which were the hardest months I've had to endure in my life. I've loved you since I got that prophecy, since we kissed right here, since I died for you. I will never regret that because I'll love you forever and always Aru."
He got down on one knee and at this point Aru was sobbing. She covered her mouth, her eyes glistening.
"Will you make me the happiest guy alive and let me be your husband?" Aiden blushed profusely, but he didn't care. Aru just nodded a lot while crying, holding out her hand.
She paused. "Where's my mom?"
"DON'T RUIN THE MOMENT BETI THIS IS CUTE! And Aiden, Shadowfax's camera quality's great."
"Mom!" She groaned, but she was grinning.
Before he could thank Krithika aunty, she took his hand, kissing him, long and slow, like when it happened for the first time.
And she was smiling. And she said yes.
And dying for her was never going to be a regret, but this? This moment that he'd dreamed of? This moment that anchored him to the real world? This moment that made him hope, that made him want to be here?
All that war?
It just became worth it.
He was Arundhati Shah's husband.
And there were only pride in his words.
