Closer/Don't Let Me Down - Robert Mendoza

The sun was coming through the window and shining at the table around which sat two people. Hank was persistently staring at the paper marked as some kind of roadmap, scratching his head, it was bitten and scratched on two sides.

Chloe was looking out the window, but she seemed to be thinking intensely about something. Her diode was blinking an intense yellow, and her fingers were spinning the bracelet with a blue flower around her wrist at a really impressive speed.

There was also Connor, who desperately tried to focus on his work, turning page by page, but something was incredibly distracting him, he wasn't sure what it was, though. As if something had stuck in his mind, letting nothing else be there.

- Jesus Christ, what do you think you're doing? - the lieutenant asked as the android jumped, afraid that the question was addressed to him, but the girl was the intended recipient. Anderson's gaze was focused on her hand, around which she was spining the silver chain.

- She does it if she's concentrated. - peacefully explained the boy, who realized what he had actually said only when the movement of the blonde-haired girl froze suddenly and the pair of blue eyes pierced his face.

- Fuck, it's horrible, Connor... - Hank squirmed with disapproval. Chloe just turned blue and looked away.

He had to make something up quickly.

- I'm a detective. I notice others' habits and I memorize them, this is just the way I am. There's nothing horrible about it. - he said, then shrugged his shoulders. He often looked more convincing when he lied instead of telling the truth, mostly because he treated convincing someone of an untruth as a mission. He could plan what to say, choose the right body language, just accomplish a task. If it came to saying something honestly and spontaneously, he often  lacked the right words.

Apparently, the Lieutenant and his partner believed his harmless lie. Because the truth was that he enjoyed watching Chloe. Surreptitiously, but not in a scaring way. She was just interesting for him and seemed somehow special, but he wouldn't admit it.

- I quess I have an idea. - the girl said, tactfully changing the topic.

- Speak.

- As far as the bartender showed us, Aaron picks up a girl from the club every evening and takes her upstairs. I could try catch his attention, and you guys meanwhile...

- No! - two male voices spoke at the same time, so unanimously and firmly that the girl felt somewhat offended

you should see me in a crown - Billie Eillish

- Maybe I'm not especially beautiful, but I know a few tricks I could use to make him notice me. - she muttered, frowning.

- I am not talking about that! - the Lieutenant snorted - First of all, the guy is not into mechanical girls, second of all - you're not going to flirt with any rich scumbag ever, it's not an option!

Connor felt like he had never agreed with Hank like that before.

- Obviously I'm not going to flirt with him! - she got disgusted - I'll just go upstairs and I'll try to find something useful. And he doesn't have to know that I'm an android, I can just get rid of my LED.

- You won't do that. - Anderson said with a voice that hated any objection - But the idea isn't stupid. Do we know any other girl who could handle that? A one that cam defend herself when there's need to?
